Job overview

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic pharmacy technician to work within our innovative and supportive Renal Medicines Service. We provide expert pharmaceutical care for people with kidney disease across South West Wales from our integrated hub in Morriston Hospital.

Increasing demand, new medication and a welcome focus on early detection and effective management of kidney disease is an opportunity for pharmacy to lead improvements in the health and wellbeing of our population.  

In this role, you will provide a medicines management service to the renal ward in Morriston Hospital and be responsible for the safe and effective dispensing, checking and issuing of medication for outpatients, including kidney transplant recipients and people needing dialysis across Swansea Bay, Hywel Dda and parts of CTM University Health Boards.

Effective communication with patients and colleagues within our multidisciplinary team and across multiple interfaces, including primary and secondary care, between Health Boards, and with other specialist teams is essential. You will play an active role in the education and training of colleagues. The post will improve your knowledge of kidney disease and deepen your understanding of complex, specialist regional service delivery.

Main duties of the job

  • Responsible for safe, efficient and effective dispensing and issuing of medication to patients from our base in Morriston Hospital, including medicines management on the renal medical ward
  • Responsible for safe, efficient and effective checking of prescriptions dispensed by other members of the pharmacy team
  • Provide medication information to patients / carers / relatives
  • Use pharmacy and renal electronic systems effectively
  • Support the maintenance, review and update of patients’ drug records on the central renal database (Vital Data)
  • Support the medicines management and timely medicines provision of, amongst others, therapies for renal anaemia and immunosuppressants for renal transplant recipients, and patients receiving unit haemodialysis (HD), home dialysis and renal transplant recipients across Swansea Bay, Hywel Dda and parts of CTM University Health Boards.
  • Responsible for the secure storage of all pharmaceutical products.
  • Assist with the training of staff in the department
  • Participate in routine pharmacy housekeeping duties
  • Adhere to medicines and other relevant legislation, and the Health Board’s personnel policies and procedures
  • Ensure the maintenance of required departmental, ethical and professional standards.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NVQ3 and BTEC in pharmaceutical science (or equivalent)
  • Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician and Medicines Management qualified
Desirable criteria
  • Supervisory management qualifications

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience of working in a hospital pharmacy department
  • Experience of managing staff
  • Using pharmacy electronic systems (including dispensing medication, stock control and input of patient demographic data), and using specialist digital systems
Desirable criteria
  • Teaching experience

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Manage the day to day provision of a pharmacy service
  • Able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team. Ability to problem solve, prioritise, innovative and well organised. Ability to recognise need for sensitive and confidential handling of patient related information
  • Good verbal and written communication
  • Ability to manage emotional demands of patient involvement. Ability to concentrate frequently under pressure and subject to interruptions.
  • Ability to motivate and act as a role model and provide advice to junior staff
  • Good IT skills
