The Spinal Service in Morriston Hospital is looking to recruit a Senior Clinical Fellow  to cover all aspects of elective adult spinal surgery for the treatment of degenerative conditions and adult deformity.

The unit also manages spinal trauma, tumour (intradural and MSCC) and infection. A wide range of open and contemporary minimally invasive procedures are performed from occiput to sacrum via posterior, lateral and anterior approaches. The unit commissioned in 2017 the first and currently only Spinal 3D navigation system in Wales and has vast experience in complex navigation procedures. Endoscopic spinal surgery has recently been commissioned in the non-complex elective spinal partner hospital in Neath Port Talbot. The successful candidate will therefore have excellent exposure to a wide range of spinal pathology, management strategies and surgical procedures/ techniques.

Main duties of the job

1)    Leading the daily spinal ward round attended by the Spinal nurse practitioners and junior Doctors. The successful candidate will be expected to be competent at recognising and managing medically and surgically deteriorating post-operative patients and be able to co-ordinate their care in conjunction with the nursing and senior medical team members. The fellow will be closely supported by the consultant body.
2)    Integrate with the Trauma and Orthopaedic department to ensure smooth management of unscheduled spinal patients admitted under their care. 
3)    The careful preoperative preparation of patients for theatre. The Spinal Unit has a robust preassessment process but the Fellow will be expected to review all pre-operative pts on the day of surgery to ensure smooth running of the theatre list.
4)    The post holder will attend theatre and gain excellent exposure and opportunity to develop specific spinal surgical skills (appropriate to the level of experience of the fellow). Although this is a non-recognised training post the fellow will be assessed and monitored through via their logbook and ISCP competencies.
5)    Attending Outpatient and Spinal Fracture Clinics under supervision of the Spinal Consultants. 
6)    Running the Spinal MDTs.  
7)    The successful candidate is expected to complete an audit cycle and submit a paper for podium presentation / journal publication within the 6 – 12 month period.

As the senior clinical fellow, you will be expected to contribute significantly to the running of the department including leading the daily spinal ward round attended by the Spinal nurse practitioners, Physician Associates and junior doctors. You will also be expected to lead the research and audit projects of the department.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC registration
  • At least 2yrs of experience in a surgical specialty Or as fixed-term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty OR equivalent experience / competencies
Desirable criteria
  • MRCS or recognised equivalent

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Up to date with current practices in Trauma and Orthopaedics or Neurosurgery or any surgical specialty
  • Evidence of working effectively as a part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Teaching and training of post/undergraduate medical staff
  • Evidence of participation in, progressing and completing audit
Desirable criteria
  • Previous Spinal Surgery experience (6 months or more)
  • Experience of research in Orthopaedics, Neurosurgery and/or Spinal Surgery
  • Previous experience of working in the NHS/experience of NHS working practices and systems.
