Job overview

An opportunity has arisen within The Northern Centre for Cancer Care for an experienced Clinical Technologist, Dosimetrist or Therapeutic Radiographer to act as a Senior Dosimetrist in the Radiotherapy Centre. 

 

There will be the opportunity to participate in developments and may be required to provide supervision and training for junior staff. Current experience of radiotherapy treatment planning is essential, and the post holder will be supported through a comprehensive in-house competency based training programme in treatment planning for a wide range of treatment sites.

 

Radiotherapy treatment planning is undertaken on Raystation. The Dosimetry teams work as a large combined service between both sites of NCCC in Newcastle and Carlisle allowing ample opportunity for the post holder to deepen their experience of complex treatment planning techniques.

Main duties of the job

  • Managing the daily organisation of own workload to ensure the delivery of the highly  specialist external beam radiotherapy dose planning service to the Northern Centre for Cancer Care (NCCC).
  • For individual patients, designing the radiotherapy plan and determining the treatment parameters on a treatment planning system.
  • For individual patients, validating treatment data generated to ensure its integrity and appropriateness for clinical use and exporting it for treatment.
  • Responsible, with the clinician, for designing highly complex plans for individual patients with particular dosimetric problems and where appropriate communicating the complex information of the plan to other staff groups.
  • Participating in research development projects from inception to completion.
  • Contribute to the delivery of training and education of all staff groups and visitors to the section.
  • Supports the mould room service at NCCC’s Carlisle site.

KNOWLEDGE

Essential criteria
  • Up to date knowledge of relevant areas of medical physics applied to treatment planning, radiotherapy physics, imaging and treatment
  • Good understanding of 3D anatomy and physiology
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of knowledge of clinical oncology
  • Evidence of knowledge of current scientific and technological developments in radiotherapy treatment including imaging modalities

SKILLS

Essential criteria
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member
  • Ability to work accurately in all areas of work
  • Good communication skills
  • Efficient time management and organizational skills
  • Evidence of numerical skills and 3D spatial awareness
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of competence in report writing and information presentation
  • Good data collection and analysis skills

EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria
  • Experience of Radiotherapy Treatment, Imaging, Dose Planning, mould room or Medical Physics in previous employment
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of radiotherapy treatment planning
  • Evidence of completed research and development projects

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential criteria
  • Honours degree in a related subject such as radiotherapy oncology or an equivalent qualification
  • Registration with the HCPC or RCT
Desirable criteria
  • Post qualification study
