Job overview

The role would also require the post holder to perform duties covering the maintenance and operation of steam boiler plant including statutory testing of safety devices and specialised ventilation plant.  Carry out Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) and breakdown maintenance to all aspects of mechanical plant, machinery, distribution and associated services including work of a technical and/or non-routine nature.  Undertake fault finding and repairs on a wide range of engineering plant, equipment and the full range of services essential to the operation of an acute hospital (including, but not restricted to building control systems, standby generators, low pressure hot water systems and associated pipe work, steam raising plant and associated equipment, kitchen equipment, operating theatre ventilation systems, industrial and domestic plumbing and drainage.

In addition to maintenance & emergency repairs the post holder will be required to carry out installation & improvements works across all of QE Facilities’ contracted sites.  All work must be carried out in compliance with organisational & customer safety standards and national legislation.

Cover shifts if required (sickness & holiday).

Participate in an on call rota and shift pattern (08:00 AM -16:00 PM & 14:00 PM - 22:00PM). This will be based on staffing levels as to what frequency this will be.

 Occasionally engaged in heavy repairs and manipulation of equipment in restricted spaces.

Main duties of the job

To Carry out Planned preventative maintenance and reactive repair works on hospital equipment along with associated plant. Work will include periodic testing and maintenance of Ventilation, Decontamination, Medical gases, steam systems including steam boilers, large heating and water systems and other plant. Fault diagnosis and failure reporting will be key elements of the role.

The post holder will be required to assess the situation in the event of such requests or emergency situations and to act to ensure safety of public/patients/and staff, then to either carry out effective repairs or summon assistance if required.

In addition to maintenance & emergency repairs the post holder will be required to carry out installation & improvements works all work must be carried out in compliance with organisational & customer safety standards and national legislation.  Occasionally engaged in heavy repairs and manipulation of equipment in restricted spaces.

All work will be provided via a PDA (Hand held computer) along with Job sheets that are required to be completed for compliance purposes.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • • Must be able to work and act on his/her own initiative with no supervision
  • • Possess the ability to work and communicate effectively in a pleasant manner with all other staff across QE Facilities contracted sites
  • • Must be able to communicate positively with customers, patients and staff from other departments & organisations
  • • Must be adaptable and flexible in all areas of work
  • • Be fully aware of Health & Safety responsibilities relating to their work and possess sufficient technical knowledge to avoid any danger to themselves, colleagues or users of any QEF contracted sites
  • • Be able to provide and receive routine and technical information from colleagues and non-technical staff to enable safe use of complex hospital equipment
  • • Provide advice or instruction on safe use of equipment to non-technical staff, carers or patients

Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Must have completed a suitable Mechanical or Electrical Apprenticeship
  • • Good customer services and customer interaction
Desirable criteria
  • • Maintenance experience in hospitals or a similar environment
  • • Industrial and domestic plumbing and drainage

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • City & Guilds craft Certificates Mechanical (Essential) or equivalent
  • • Electrical and/or Mechanical BTec ONC or relevant experience
  • • Current UK driving licence
Desirable criteria
  • • HNC/HND
