Job overview

This post is based at the Darlington Memorial Hospital however you may be required to carry out work at any other site maintained by QE Facilities (Transport provided).

The successful candidates will be required to carry out:

Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) and breakdown maintenance to all aspects of electrical/mechanical plant & distribution systems.

Testing and fault finding on a wide range of electrical engineering plant and equipment, including but not restricted to: electrical distribution, lighting, fire detection, standby generators & nurse call systems.

Carry out minor installation and improvement works, and other maintenance activities at the request of the engineering supervisor.

This post will require the post holder to participate in the site’s shift and on-call rota system, where there may be minimal supervision, covering all of the properties maintained by QE Facilities.

All work must be carried out in compliance within QE Facilities safety standards and national legislation. The post holder must be fully aware of their Health & Safety responsibilities relating to their work and possess sufficient technical knowledge to avoid any danger to themselves, colleagues, hospital staff, patients and members of the public.

Must be able to work and act on his/her own initiative with minimum supervision and possess the ability to work and communicate effectively in a pleasant manner with all other members of staff across the QE Facilities remit. 

Main duties of the job

To respond to requests for repairs, faults and emergencies involving all aspects of electrical, mechanical & building services - The post holder will be required to assess the situation in the event of such requests or emergency situations and as a first measure, act to ensure safety of public/patients/other staff then to either affect repairs or summon assistance as required.

QE Facilities operates a multi skilled policy and the post holder is required to demonstrate a high degree of cross trade flexibility beyond the boundaries of their core skills including Mechanical and Building Maintenance works supported with in-house training.  The post holder will be expected to carry out minor mechanical/building work, in connection with their main duties at the discretion of the supervising officer, which, under extreme conditions shall include gritting and snow clearing.

Actively participate in the operation of the QE Facilities helpdesk, including the timely completion of work dockets via a PDA (hand held computer) this includes job sheets with a Tradesman’s report detailing time taken and materials used for costing purposes.

The Post holder shall be occasionally required to work overtime, possibly with minimal notice, to carry out works in places not available during normal hours in order to ensure operational activities are maintained.

Carry business / QEF communication devices pagers, two way radios or mobile phones to enable post holder to be contacted by supervisor.

We provide a range of non- clinical services to GHNT and other NHS organisations. Our services include: estates, facilities services, procurement, medical engineering and devices, endoscopy decontamination and sterile services, transport, out-patient pharmacy, and prevention & management of violence & aggression training (PMVA). 

In addition we provide consultancy services, advising clients on all aspects of establishing a subsidiary company within an NHS body to the provision of VAT compliance advice.

QE Facilities work to their own Terms and Conditions and these are not the same as Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust Terms and Conditions. This is not an Agenda for Change Pay Rate

Person specification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Good customer services and customer interaction
  • Must have completed a suitable Electrical Apprenticeship
Desirable criteria
  • Maintenance experience in hospitals or a similar environment

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • City & Guilds craft Certificates electrical or NVQ Level 3 in engineering maintenance
  • Electrical and/or Mechanical BTec ONC or relevant experience
  • Current UK driving licence
  • 18th edition IEE regulations
Desirable criteria
  • HNC/HND
  • 2391 or 2394 & 2395 inspection & testing

Knowledge&Skills

Essential criteria
  • Must be able to work and act on his/her own initiative with no supervision
  • Possess the ability to work and communicate effectively in a pleasant manner with all other staff across QE Facilities contracted sites
  • Must be able to communicate positively with customers, patients and staff from other departments & organisations

  • Provide advice or instruction on safe use of equipment to non-technical staff, carers or patients
