Job overview

We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic, innovative and progressive Consultant Radiologist to work within a cohesive and supportive multi-disciplinary team, to provide a quality service in our breast symptomatic and screening services.

The Breast Unit has seen a progressive rise in symptomatic referrals in recent years and this has resulted in a steady increase in demand for all aspects of breast imaging. Predictions are that this rise will continue at about 8% per year.

This particular post requires a highly skilled breast radiologist who has specialized in breast radiology during their training. There is funding available for up to a 10PA consultant breast radiologist position and will be expected to read a minimum of 5000 cases per annum and allocated film reading time is part of the job plan. The department screens the eligible populations of Gateshead, North Durham and Sunderland over a 3 year cycle. The total population for this area currently stands at approximately 122,000. The department screens approximately 35.000 women per year.

Main duties of the job

The applicant will have specialist radiology duties at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead Breast Imaging Department and at our satellite facility at Grindon Lane Primary Care Centre. He/She would be expected to undertake the following (which is not an exhaustive list):

1. Contribute to the team of breast radiologists in screen reading, assessment, symptomatic work and localisations.

2. Actively contribute to the multi professional team working in the department demonstrating a firm commitment to respect and include all disciplines and roles within the service.

3. Participate in and contribute to the appropriate clinical and educational activities of the Breast Unit.

4. Participate in the managerial, teaching and regular audit activities of the Breast Unit.

5. Contribute to the MDT work of the breast unit.

6. Seven day working has not yet been implemented within Breast Imaging although there are some weekend screening clinics for the radiographers.

7. There is no on-call commitment associated with this post

Working for our organisation
