We are seeking an enthusiastic, caring Staff Nurse or ODP to join us in the Endoscopy Department at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead.
Endoscopy is a fast-paced specialist service that offers a unique nursing experience. We are committed to offering world class endoscopy training and are subscribed to the JAG JETs training system which provides our nurses with nationally recognised accreditation for the skills and knowledge they acquire during their development pathway.
We are a JAG accredited Bowel Cancer Screening centre and are proud of the standards we have achieved.
The successful candidate will be part of a highly-skilled team responsible for the pre assessment of patients requiring an endoscopic procedure as well as working in the endoscopy department.
The successful candidate will need to possess excellent communication and organisational skills, be able to demonstrate leadership skills, work proactively as part of a successful team and demonstrate initiative and problem-solving skills. They must also be able to manage their time effectively and work flexibly to meet the ever-changing requirements of the service both within the department and also Trust-wide.
You will be a 1st Level Staff Nurse with evidence of ongoing professional development.
Endoscopy experience would be beneficial, although not essential.
Main duties of the job
You will be pre assessing patients to assess their suitability for endoscopic procedures and manage the patient pathway. As well as supporting our Gastrointestinal, Urological, Gynaecological and Respiratory patients through all stages of their procedure pathway, whilst also ensuring that the endoscopic equipment is maintained according to our high standards.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- To plan, co-ordinate and implement endoscopy sessions appropriate to service needs.
- Ensures that an accurate medical and nursing history is carried out and recorded which encompasses appropriate tests and investigations.
- Evaluate provision of endoscopy service by means of audit and initiate changes as appropriate.
- To assist in setting and monitoring standards of care and ensure that nursing practice is audited and research/evidence based.
- To assist in developing a learning environment that is appropriate for the development needs of trained and untrained staff.
- To facilitate in the development of a multi-disciplinary approach to patient care.
- To provide clinical expertise and advice to other staff and facilitate training and development to the multi-disciplinary team where appropriate.
- To support and promote an integrated approach to quality, which will include infection control, health promotion and education.
- To ensure effective communication between wards/departments/consultants/outpatients department.
- To ensure patients are effectively pre-optimised prior to procedures facilitating the efficient flow of patients through the department.
- To be proactive within and support the modernisation of Endoscopy services in line with the National Endoscopy programme.
- To work flexibly and be adaptable to new ways of working. There will be a requirement to meet service needs.
- To work collaboratively with the Endoscopy staff, Nurse Endoscopists, Clinicians and Colorectal team and other key stakeholders to provide a seamless pathway of care for Endoscopy patients as well as other specialties.
