Main duties of the job

A post CCT level Trust Doctor post is available based at both the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead and County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust (CDDFT) starting September 2026 for 12 months within the Gastroenterology Departments at QE and CDDFT.

The post would be ideally suitable for GI Specialist Registrar who has competed registrar specialty training and has a specialist interest in therapeutic endoscopy.

Professor Anjan Dhar (Consultant Luminal Gastroenterologist & Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopist at CDDFT) and Dr Jamie Barbour (Therapeutic Endoscopist and Endoscopy training lead for QE Gateshead) would supervise the trainee.

Working for our organisation

Based in the North East of England we provide a range of hospital and community health services from our leading facilities, including the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Blaydon urgent care centre and Bensham Hospital, all within Gateshead.

Established in 2005, we were one of the first foundation trusts in the country and since then have consistently achieved the highest levels of care for patients.

We now employ around 4,800 staff and currently provide 444 hospital beds across the Gateshead region.

Our values should be the ‘golden thread’ which runs through everything we do – they are the core of who we are. Our five values can easily be remembered by the simple acronym ICORE; Innovation, Care, Openness, Respect, Engagement.

We have a number of staff networks including the Global Ethnic Majority (GEM) network, D-Ability network, LGBTQ+ Network and the Women’s Network, to challenge us and help us to constantly improve. Our Armed Forces network is one of our emerging networks.

The health and wellbeing of our staff is one of our highest priorities, and we offer a range of support and initiatives as part of our ‘Balance’ programme balancegateshead.com to cater for our diverse workforce, so that your individual needs can be supported, allowing you a happy and healthy working experience with us.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

QE and Durham and Darlington share a regional Complex Rectal Lesion (CRL) MDT meeting every fortnight. We discuss complex polyp cases from across the region. Attendance and supporting the endoscopy team for these meetings would be expected. This will give good insight into the therapeutic potential now available for patients.

Therapeutic lower GI training will consist of a therapeutic training list every week and 1-2 service lists/therapeutic lists per week.

Dr Barbour offers ESD for lower GI lesions both in endoscopy and in theatre. Understanding the indications and the patient pathway for ESD would be an important aspect to the attachment. Supporting ESD lists will also be part of the fellow training. Training will consist of up skilling in lesion recognition and piecemeal EMR first and then moving onto ESD when appropriate

Dr Barbour and Professor Dhar offer POEMs procedures in James Cook University Hospital (JCUH) in association with Prof Vishwanath. We have a regional Achalasia MDT every month and we perform POEMs procedure every month at JCUH. Preparing these MDT meetings and ensuring the outcomes are communicated to referring teams would be expected as well as attending a POEM list or 2 as an observer.

Professor Dhar has specialist interests in Barrett’s Oesophagus and Oesophageal Diseases and there will be opportunities to be involved in training in lesion detection in Barrett’s surveillance, endoscopic mucosal resection and Radiofrequency Ablation. Oesophageal, pyloric and colonic dilatation, stent placement, Wireless pH capsule placement, stentfix and OTSC clip application and IBD assessment and surveillance. Research opportunities in cutting edge technology such as Artificial Intelligence in Endoscopy and EndoFLIP are expected to be available.
