Job overview

This post is a part-teaching/part-clinical role, within the department of Paediatrics, with the main focus being on the delivery and development of the Newcastle Medical School Undergraduate curriculum in Child Health.  It would suit an applicant who aims to pursue a career in Paediatrics and/or has a keen interest in medical education and would like to enhance their teaching skills and experience.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be involved in coordinating and providing the undergraduate clinical teaching programme (20 hours/week) and will undertake 20 hours/week clinical duties and professional development. This includes developing educational sessions (including simulation), timetable planning, bedside and clinical teaching, and the organization and running of the assessment process for the undergraduate students (formal clinical encounters).

The main clinical duties are to support the Paediatric department, covering neonatal community, acute Paediatric emergencies and outpatient clinics. Specialist clinics and training can be arranged according to career interests.  Clinical research is an important aspect of daily practice in this unit, and so opportunities will be available to complete ‘Good Clinical Practice’ training to support the participation in recruitment to Trust Clinical Research Trials.

Working for our organisation

Based in the North East of England we provide a range of hospital and community health services from our leading facilities, including the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Blaydon urgent care centre and Bensham Hospital, all within Gateshead.

Established in 2005, we were one of the first foundation trusts in the country and since then have consistently achieved the highest levels of care for patients.

We now employ around 4,800 staff and currently provide 444 hospital beds across the Gateshead region.

Our values should be the ‘golden thread’ which runs through everything we do – they are the core of who we are. Our five values can easily be remembered by the simple acronym ICORE; Innovation, Care, Openness, Respect, Engagement.

We have a number of staff networks including the Global Ethnic Majority (GEM) network, D-Ability network, LGBTQ+ Network and the Women’s Network, to challenge us and help us to constantly improve. Our Armed Forces network is one of our emerging networks.

The health and wellbeing of our staff is one of our highest priorities, and we offer a range of support and initiatives as part of our ‘Balance’ programme balancegateshead.com to cater for our diverse workforce, so that your individual needs can be supported, allowing you a happy and healthy working experience with us.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This post focuses heavily on the provision of undergraduate medical education within Child Health, to facilitate the year 3 and year 5 students who rotate through the unit on an annual basis.

Within this role, good administrative and organizational skills are of importance in formulating individualized timetables for students and ensuring an equal and fair exposure to clinical sessions for each student.

Teaching opportunities will be many and varied, and an enthusiasm for education will be essential. A wide variety of clinical settings are used for teaching and training, and the post-holder would be expected to provide teaching to individuals, small groups and more formal teaching sessions in addition to being trained as a simulation training faculty member whilst in post. The post-holder would be expected to participate in student induction sessions and assessment sessions alongside Dr. Mannikar and the Clinical Teaching Fellow Paediatric ACP.

A variety of clinical sessions are provided within the job plan as per departmental requirements, and it is expected that these will provide the post-holder with valuable clinical experience as well as providing an opportunity to deliver clinical teaching.
