Main duties of the job

Working as part of the QE Facilities Outpatient Pharmacy team, you will help deliver a professional, high-quality and patient-focused service to patients and visitors. You will provide excellent customer service, support the safe sale of over-the-counter medicines within your level of training and competency, and ensure patient confidentiality is maintained at all times. The role also involves following Pharmacy Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), understanding the legal and professional requirements of working within a GPhC-registered pharmacy, and maintaining a clean, safe and welcoming environment.

You will be responsible for processing cash and card payments, supporting stock control activities, ordering pharmacy counter stock, assisting with stock take activity, and printing of patient prescriptions. Working closely with colleagues, you will contribute to the achievement of service objectives and key performance indicators, while actively participating in training, appraisal and personal development activities to maintain and enhance your knowledge and skills.

QE Facilities (QEF) is a wholly owned subsidiary company of Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust (GHNT), based in the North East of England.

We provide a range of non- clinical services to GHNT and other NHS organisations. Our services include: estates, facilities services, procurement, medical engineering and devices, endoscopy decontamination and sterile services, transport, out-patient pharmacy, and prevention & management of violence & aggression training (PMVA). 

In addition we provide consultancy services, advising clients on all aspects of establishing a subsidiary company within an NHS body to the provision of VAT compliance advice.

QE Facilities work to their own Terms and Conditions and these are not the same as Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust Terms and Conditions. This is not an Agenda for Change Pay Rate.

We do not hold a sponsorship licence and are unable to offer employment under any sponsorship arrangement. 

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Deliver a professional, patient-focused service as part of the QE Facilities Outpatient Pharmacy team.
  • Provide excellent customer service and support patients with their pharmacy needs.
  • Supply and sell over-the-counter medicines, providing appropriate advice within your competency.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with pharmacy legal and professional standards.
  • Process prescriptions, cash and card payments accurately.
  • Support stock ordering, replenishment and stock control activities.
  • Follow Pharmacy Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and safer care principles.
  • Maintain a clean, safe and organised pharmacy environment.
  • Refer queries appropriately to the Pharmacy team or Responsible Pharmacist.
  • Contribute to service performance targets and participate in ongoing training and development.

Person specification

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of the Laws, Guidelines and Standards relating to the sale and supply of medicines from a GPhC registered Pharmacy
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills. Ability to explain clearly and listen to members of the public and other healthcare professionals
  • Demonstrate excellent Customer skills
  • Demonstrate an appropriate level of IT skills
  • Demonstrate appropriate level of organisational skills

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Pharmacy Counter Assistant experience in Hospital Pharmacy or Community Pharmacy

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Have an MCA or HCA NVQ Level 2 in Pharmacy Services
