Job overview
The Prosthodontic department at Newcastle Dental Hospital delivers a varied range of routine and specialist dental treatment to a wide range of patients.
Although our main focus is delivering prosthetic appliances to patients such as dentures, crowns and bridges we also provide other conservation treatment which falls under the restorative umbrella. We also deliver treatment and review patients who have been diagnosed with head and neck cancer, patients who meet NHS criteria implants and treat patients who have moderate to advanced periodontal disease with our staff hygienists and carry out surgical procedures for Endodontics etc.
The Prosthodontic clinic's dental nursing team work alongside a range of different experience levels of staff as well as undergraduate students.
You may be required to work on other dental departments within the Dental Hospital to cover absences at certain times.

Main duties of the job
The role of the Registered Dental Nurse is to provide high standards of clinical care and support to post graduate and undergraduate clinicians as well as various staff grades; under the management of the Senior Dental Nurse.
The role involves the preparation and maintenance of the clinical areas including stocks of materials and equipment and collecting and inputting data into the patient administration system.
Working on Level 5 of the Dental Hospital within the Prosthodontic Clinic you will be required to work on various treatment and new patient consultation clinics as part of your role or to cover absences ranging from student treatment, junior staff treatment lists, STR/Consultant treatment lists and specialty clinics such as the Oncology Support Clinic.
Although based on a specific department within the Dental Hospital , the post holder will be required to work as necessary within any area of the Dental Hospital and other dental units within the trust.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- To provide chair-side assistance (including patients being treated under General Anaesthetic) to all grades of dental staff and students working within the dental hospital.
- To prepare all instruments, equipment and materials required for treatment.
- To provide care and support for patients undergoing a variety of treatments.
- To provide pre and post operative instructions and advice, so maintaining a high standard of patient care at all times.
- To ensure patient confidentiality is always upheld.
- To provide administrative assistance with regard to liaising with patients and other external agencies.
- To provide clinical supervision and practical training to student dental nurses and other less experienced staff on a daily basis.
- To ensure that cross infection control, the cleanliness of the department, stock levels and equipment are well maintained.

- National Certificate in Dental Nursing or NVQ Level 3 in Oral Healthcare Portfolio must be completed and signed.
