Job overview
Following retirement, we are looking to appoint an ambitious and talented Dental Laboratory Manager with strong leadership skills, to oversee the Technical Laboratories here at Newcastle Dental Hospital.
This is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and enthusiastic Dental Technician and leader to shape, direct and manage our Laboratories across the Dental Hospital. This comprises Orthodontics, Prosthodontics, Crown and Bridge and Maxillo Facial specialities with some 25 technical staff including Technicians, Lab Assistants and Apprentices.
The post holder will be a key individual working closely with the senior management team, and senior clinical team to drive forward the continued provision of excellent technical services, adapting to future digital trends and the needs of patients and staff. Providing training and leadership to the Directorate you will be instrumental in adapting this highly specialised and skilled workforce to future challenges, and continued provision of value for money Technical services in one of the largest Dental Hospitals in the country.

Main duties of the job
You will be responsible for the efficient management of human, financial and physical resources of the Laboratories, as well as being a Lead Technical expert in your relevant speciality producing highly specialised work for patients. Leadership and management of staff, allocation of resources, liaising with Consultants and working alongside the University of Newcastle in partnership to provide Technical support to Undergraduate and Post Graduate teaching are essential parts of this challenging, but rewarding role.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- The post holder is responsible for the efficient management of the technical production laboratories whose services include the provision of oral, facial and body prostheses.
The post holder will advise consultant staff and other lead clinicians on the design and manufacture of highly complex, specialised work as required.
The post holder is required to monitor work commissioned from commercial laboratories.
To ensure staff and students training needs are delivered efficiently and effectively.
Whilst a management role the post holder will be expected to maintain their own technical expertise by producing highly specialised work for patients as appropriate.
Please note it is a requirement of The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust that all successful candidates who require a DBS for the post they have been offered pay for their DBS certificate. The method of payment is a salary deduction from your first month’s pay.

KNOWLEDGE
Essential criteria
- Highly developed specialist knowledge of a wide range of technical procedures from multiple disciplines.
- Highly specialist complex appliances including Implants and Maxillofacial work.
Desirable criteria
- Teaching and instructing
SKILLS
Essential criteria
- Good communication and organisational skills.
- Leadership and persuasive/influencing skills.
Desirable criteria
- Competent in the use of IT techniques.
EXPERIENCE
Essential criteria
- In-depth experience of Implants, Maxillofacial and precision attachment work.
- Management experience
- Experience of Medical Devices Directive.
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working in a hospital dental laboratory.
QUALIFICATIONS
Essential criteria
- Registered dental technician holding a BTEC Diploma or HNC or BSc Degree in Dental Technology
- Nationally recognised advanced/higher level dental technical qualification and relevant dental disciplines (HND, Masters degree, or equivalent experience).
Applicant requirements
You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
