Job overview

We are excited to be able to offer a Band 7 opportunity within our Senior Nursing Team on our Paediatric Critical Care Unit at the Great North Childrens Hospital, RVI site.

The successful candidate will be able to prove a high level of achievement, motivation and enthusiasm in their current role, with extensive experience in a children’s intensive care unit. They will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the unique challenges of a PICU whilst remaining professional, resilient, optimistic and resourceful.

The role will work seamlessly alongside the PICU Senior Nursing Team and the Great North Children's Hospital Matrons and Deputy Matrons and will be supported by the Clinical Board Team. The team are very committed to ensuring a positive staff experience and sustain our excellent staff wellbeing and retention strategy.

Permanent Post - 32 hours 30 minutes/week - 11 shifts per rota

Temporary Post - 28 hours 45 minutes/week - 10 shifts per rota - until 03/05/2026 - secondments available

  • Maintain clinical excellence  in paediatric children's critical care

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

There has never been a better time to join our Paediatric Critical Care team at the Great North Children's Hospital. With an expanding service, and a plan for new Paediatric High Dependency with the initial opening of 2 beds, now is the time to join our team. We have 12 commissioned PICU beds and 2 PHDU beds.

We support our local children in the North East and Cumbria who require emergency treatment or are undergoing surgery requiring Intensive Care admission. Our PICU is a busy dynamic unit providing care for children with a variety of health care needs. Specialties include neurosurgery, neurology, trauma, oncology, BMT and plastic surgery, as well as paediatric surgery, paediatric infectious diseases and paediatric medicine.

  • The Senior Sister / Charge Nurse has 24 hour accountability, including line managing, for their ward / department. They must deliver quality nursing care by ensuring appropriate systems and processes are in place to ensure the continuity of safe and effective care at all times.

  • Deputises for Matron as required / appropriate

KNOWLEDGE

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of achievement in current post and on-going professional development
  • Knowledge and understanding of current relevant NHS policy context
Desirable criteria
  • Specialist course in area of practice

SKILLS

Essential criteria
  • Have developed skills in professional accountability in a leadership role
  • Good IT skills
  • Intravenous drug administration
  • Venepuncture and intravenous cannulation

EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria
  • Experience of leading a nursing team at SR/CN level or equivalent
  • Extensive clinical practice or specialist qualification in relevant specialty
  • Experience of adult / child safeguarding
  • Audit / research experience
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of developing a nursing team at SR/CN level
  • Experience in a Cardiothoracic ITU

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse (appropriate to branch)
  • Current NMC registration
  • Degree level knowledge or working towards completion (i.e. on pathway)
  • Meets Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) requirements for mentorship if relevant to role
  • Relevant qualification within Critical Care
Desirable criteria
  • Master’s degree
  • Leadership / management qualification
