Job overview

We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our well integrated team. 

This post is suitable for a cardiologist at trainee level to gain subspecialty experience in interventional cardiology at Freeman Hospital is available.  The appointment is to commence on the 01 September 2025 for 12 months. 

Candidates should be nearing the end of their specialist training in cardiology, be proficient in coronary angiography and have solid proficiency in coronary interventions. The fellow will also have the opportunity to train in complex interventions. In addition, we have an high volume active transcatheter aortic and mitral valves intervention program. The post-holder would gain wide practical experience in all aspects of PCI and gain exposure to TAVI and mitral valves interventions. The fellow would participate in the department clinical research and is expected to deliver and output of manuscripts and publications.

Main duties of the job

This post is an opportunity to gain experience in interventional cardiology in a high volume UK centre including primary PCI service.  This post would be suitable for a candidate post-CCT in cardiology, or with equivalent experience, aiming for appointment as a consultant specialising in interventional cardiology. The appointee would gain a large volume of practical experience in percutaneous coronary intervention including PPCI, IVUS, rotational atherectomy, pressure wire assessment, laser catheters, percutaneous treatment for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and transcutaneous aortic and mitral valves intervention.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical:

·         The successful appointee will work with all the interventional consultants.  Duties will include multiple weekly lab sessions working alongside consultant staff. There will be responsibility for the management of patients undergoing interventional cardiology procedures. There will be occasional out-patient commitment. 

Administrative:

·         Responsibility for recording the procedural report and completion of BCIS and MINAP data collection after each case, writing discharge summaries, communication with General Practitioners will be necessary.  

Other:

·         Attendance and participation at the weekly cardiothoracic MDT, educational meeting and PCI quality assurance programme

·         After completing the fellowship program all our fellows have managed to secure excellent jobs at consultant level.

Emergency and On-call Responsibilities:

·         The Interventional Fellow will not be required to participate in the StRs out-of-hours rota.  Attendance at out-of-hours PCI for further experience in emergency revascularisation will be offered 

Education and Training:

·         A named educational supervisor (Professor M Egred) will discuss the needs of the Fellow at the start of the job and review them regularly. The will be required to undertake recruitment into the departmental research studies and the administrative activities are opportunities for Audit, and the fellows will also be encouraged to develop an interest in the research activities of the department.  The appointee will be involved as a sub-investigator for on-going clinical studies in the department. 

Accountability:

The Clinical Fellows are accountable in their clinical duties to the consultants whose patients they are managing in the first instance, to the Clinical Director of cardiothoracic services and ultimately to the Medical Director of the Trust. 

Flexibility: 

In line with the Trust’s core value of placing patients at the heart of everything we do, we are developing our service provision to be responsive to the needs of our patients. To meet those needs some staff groups will be increasingly asked to work a more flexible work pattern so that they can offer services in the evening or weekend.  As a result any offer of employment to a consultant post will be subject to you agreeing to work a new more flexible pattern or working in the future if required, including evening and weekend work.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MB or Primary Medical Qualification
  • Full GMC registration or eligibility to obtain this within 3 months
  • MRCP or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Research degree and record of publications

Clinical Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of competence in care of cardiac patients at StR level
  • Fully competent in diagnostic cardiac catheterisation and transthoracic echocardiography
  • PCI experience as first operator.
Desirable criteria
  • Advanced PCI experience

Maintaining Clinical Competence

Essential criteria
  • Written evidence of satisfactory training to date e.g. workplace assessments

Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Experience of teaching undergraduate medical students & Foundation Doctors

  • Any objective evidence of competency in teaching. ALS instructor status
