We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our well integrated team.
Posts are available from January 2026 for 12 months in the first instance.
The cardiothoracic department caseload in this tertiary referral centre consists of approximately 1200 adult cardiothoracic cases per year, including but not limited to, conventional cardiac surgery, MICS, thoracic surgery, heart & lung transplantation, aortic surgery, mechanical circulatory support implantation such as VAD & Impella , cardiology cases, and adult congenital. There is a well-developed thoracic surgery including VATS & RATS, and cardiopulmonary transplantation programme. We do 30-35 ECMO cases per year, mainly VA ECMO. We provide critical care support to our tertiary cardiology services which include primary PCI, heart failure, TAVI, TEER, TTVR, and advanced life support or in hospital ECPR. Transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography is widely used and taught. There is ample opportunity for clinical research and audit.
Main duties of the job
The post is suitable for those candidates who wish to take time out of their training programme or who are already accredited and wish to further training and experience in or cardiothoracic intensive care. It would suit and can be tailored to the needs of applicants from various disciplines such as Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia, General Anaesthesia, Critical Care, and Cardiology.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post is based in our Cardiothoracic anaesthesia theatres and Cardiac Intensive Care unit (CICU). The CICU has twenty-one level three beds (six isolation cubicles) and seven level two beds in an adjoining area. CICU duties are based in these areas but extend to support deteriorating patients on the wards, support for cardiology emergencies and accompanying patients during transport to other centres.

Education and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Primary Medical Qualification.
- Full GMC registration or eligibility to obtain this within 3 months (or within 6 months for non-EEA applicants).
- Working towards FFICM, FRCA, MRCP or similar
Desirable criteria
- Other relevant qualifications (ALS, ATLS, CcrISP, EDIC, FFICM).
- TOE certification.
Clinical Skills and Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Good history and examination skills.
- Ability to formulate a differential diagnosis.
- Able to order appropriate investigations.
- Able to manage common medical emergencies and ongoing management in critical care.
- Knows when to appropriately seek assistance from a senior colleague.
Desirable criteria
- Neat, legible writing of notes/charts.
- Computer skills.
- Experience in Echocardiography
- Previous NHS Experience.
Maintaining Clinical Competence
Essential criteria
- In 4th year or equivalent of SpR training.
- Evidence of smooth progression through training programmes.
Teaching
Essential criteria
- Have experience in teaching undergraduate medical students, foundation year 1 doctors, nursing or allied health professional staff
Desirable criteria
- Willingness to develop new approaches to teaching and learning.
- Postgraduate diploma in medical education
Clinical Governance, Audit and Research
Essential criteria
- Experience of audit projects.
Desirable criteria
- Current Good Clinical Practice certification
- Active in research
