Consultant Neurologist
Consultant
Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the busiest and largest NHS foundation trusts in the country, with around 15,000 staff and an annual budget of £1.6 billion.
We have a long history of providing high quality care, clinical excellence, and innovation in medical research regionally, nationally and internationally.
We’re in the top five providers of specialised health services in the country, supporting people with a range of rare and complex medical, surgical and neurological conditions, cancers and genetic orders.
Our staff oversee around 6,500 patient contacts each day, delivering high standards of healthcare.
We are committed to promoting equality and diversity and recognise the benefit in providing an inclusive environment. We value and respect the diversity of our employees and aim to recruit a workforce which reflects the communities we serve, and is equipped to deliver the best service to our patients. We welcome all applications irrespective of people’s race, disability, sex, sexual orientation, religion or belief, age, gender identity, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity and in particular those from under- represented groups.
Newcastle Hospitals are proud to be one of the exemplar organisations across the NHS on sustainability, with a long history of delivering Sustainable Healthcare in Newcastle (Shine) and the first healthcare organisation in the world to declare a climate emergency. Our strategy includes commitments to being Net Zero by 2030, for our direct carbon footprint, and Net Zero by 2040 for our footprint plus. Delivering these ambitions will not be possible without the help, support and action of every single member of our team.
Job overview
We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a motivated, ambitious individual to join our well-integrated team. We strongly encourage informal contact from interested clinicians. This is a substantive, full-time post ideal for someone at the start or mid-point of their consultant career. Roughly half the clinical work will be general neurology, contributing to the acute service and outpatients service, and half contributing to the subspecialty motor neurone disease service. We are already a research active centre, with both commercial and investigator led trials. We have secured funding for one day a week through the Doddy Weir foundation for the first three years to facilitate the successful candidate in developing and contributing to clinical trials and academic research activity which will hopefully be self-funding from that point on. Should this not be the case, we would guarantee the option of a full-time NHS clinical job. While advertised as full-time, we would be happy to consider less than full time working or full-time working in a compressed job plan. We are more than happy to be approached to discuss how the illustrative plan below might be adjusted to meet a candidate’s preferences.
Main duties of the job
· Participate in departmental work in providing general outpatient neurology services
· Provide a specialist motor neurone disease service
o Outpatient clinics and MDT
o Local and regional expert advice
o Develop leadership and networking skills to provide/support clinical leadership for the service in the future
o Continue to develop and support national MND network and centre profile (e.g. membership of national MND clinical studies group (CSG) and MND trial portfolio management group).
· Provide an attending acute neurology service (typically 4 weeks a year)
· Contribute to on-call out of hours and weekend service (4 weeks a year)
Working for our organisation
Our staff oversee over 6,500 patient contacts every day, delivering high standards of healthcare from the following sites:
• Freeman Hospital
• Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI)
• Health Innovation Neighbourhood (on the former Newcastle General Hospital and Centre for Ageing and Vitality site)
• Newcastle Dental Hospital
• Newcastle Fertility Centre
• Northern Centre for Cancer Care, North Cumbria
• Northern Genetics Service
• Cramlington Manor Walks
These include a range of flagship services which deliver cutting-edge care (supported by state-of-the-art diagnostic services in both radiology and pathology) and are a catalyst for innovation to support pioneering clinical practice in the NHS.
We also have offices at Regent Point in Gosforth and community sites.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
This is a full time substantive post based at the Royal Victoria infirmary in Newcastle. Clinical work will be roughly 50/50 general neurology/motor neuron disease. Motor neuron disease clinics are based nearby the Campus for Aging and Vitality. For the first three years, we have secured one day a week funding from the Doddy Weir Foundation to allow the candidate to participate in the current clinical trials programme and build-up a personal research portfolio which will hopefully be self-sustaining. There are existing NHS schemes to facilitate development of clinical academics and this is an ideal starting point to explore this.
