Job overview
This is an exciting opportunity to join the NIHR Commercial Research Delivery Centre (CRDC) team in Newcastle, as a Data Manager. CRDCs were launched in the UK in April 2025 and provide dedicated resource for the efficient set-up and delivery of commercial research. CRDC Newcastle will deliver clinical research across a range of medical specialties, with a key focus on diseases and conditions which disproportionately impact the population in the North East of England.
The CRDC has a regional remit and will be working together with local partners in both primary and secondary care, to improve the reach of commercial research across the North East, through the use of a hub-and-spoke model.
The Data Manager is an integral part of our Research Team, responsible for the collection of data within our portfolio of clinical trials. The post holder will be required to work closely with the clinical and non-clinical team to ensure the timely entry of data and query resolution.

Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will work between several external databases and internal patient management systems to ensure data is transferred accurately for patients treated within clinical trials from one medium to another. You will be part of a multi-disciplinary team working towards tight deadlines. Responsibilities will include liaising with sponsors and trust staff, preparation of support documentation for the clinical team, maintaining accurate records and handling data queries.
The successful candidate should have a flexible approach to their duties with the ability to work as part of a team and individually. It is important the individual is experienced in Microsoft Windows applications and can collate, analyse, and present accurate data with an awareness of the Data Protection Act. The individual will possess excellent communication skills with the ability to prioritise tasks and demonstrate organisation and time management skills.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- To be responsible for the collection of data relating to patients treated within the department, in particular, where the patient is entered onto a clinical trial.
- Act as a point of contact for regional, national and international data queries.
- Ensure that Trust policy regarding Data Protection is adhered to.
- Assist the Trial Coordinator in all aspects of maintaining records of patients on trials and the regulatory issues that govern the management of clinical trials.
- Provide administrative support when needed.

KNOWLEDGE
Essential criteria
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- Knowledge of trust policy regarding Data Protection - Caldicott Guidelines, Data Protection Act
Desirable criteria
- Good working knowledge of clinical trials and the regulatory bodies to include: GCP, ICH
- Knowledge of eRecord
SKILLS
Essential criteria
- Must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills – able to communicate across a multi-disciplinary team (both verbal and written)
- Ability to prioritise tasks and demonstrate organisational and time management skills
- Ability to accurately transfer data from one medium to another (using paper based and electronic data capture)
Desirable criteria
