Band 8a
Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the busiest and largest NHS foundation trusts in the country, with around 15,000 staff and an annual budget of £1.6 billion.
We have a long history of providing high quality care, clinical excellence, and innovation in medical research regionally, nationally and internationally.
We’re in the top five providers of specialised health services in the country, supporting people with a range of rare and complex medical, surgical and neurological conditions, cancers and genetic orders.
Our staff oversee around 6,500 patient contacts each day, delivering high standards of healthcare.
We are committed to promoting equality and diversity and recognise the benefit in providing an inclusive environment. We value and respect the diversity of our employees and aim to recruit a workforce which reflects the communities we serve, and is equipped to deliver the best service to our patients. We welcome all applications irrespective of people’s race, disability, sex, sexual orientation, religion or belief, age, gender identity, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity and in particular those from under- represented groups.
Newcastle Hospitals are proud to be one of the exemplar organisations across the NHS on sustainability, with a long history of delivering Sustainable Healthcare in Newcastle (Shine) and the first healthcare organisation in the world to declare a climate emergency. Our strategy includes commitments to being Net Zero by 2030, for our direct carbon footprint, and Net Zero by 2040 for our footprint plus. Delivering these ambitions will not be possible without the help, support and action of every single member of our team.
Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a driven and enthusiastic Advanced Clinical Pharmacist to join the Medicine and Emergency Care Team at Newcastle upon Tyne hospitals.
We are looking for an innovative individual to help develop and lead the new Pharmacy Service into Immunology and Allergy. The clinical board has provided significant investment into pharmacy and views us as integral for the future. This is a fantastic opportunity to develop your knowledge and skills into your specialist area and become a key part of both the clinical and pharmacy teams, all to help provide the best possible care for our patients.
The role will be based at one of our large teaching hospitals, the Freeman Hospital or the Royal Victoria Infirmary.
This is an exciting time to become part of the Pharmacy Team at Newcastle, where under the leadership of our new Director of Pharmacy, the team is set to grow and take on a number of new roles. For more information we would strongly encourage interested individuals to get in contact for an informal chat or visit to understand more about this role.

Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will work to establish themselves in both the Immunology and Allergy team and the existing Clinical Pharmacy Team. You will need excellent communication and decision-making skills and be an experienced independent prescriber. Experience of working in a specialist area or prescribing specialist medication would be an advantage but is not essential.
There will be an expectation that the pharmacist in this role will help to identify cost savings (i.e through biosimilar switching) and other innovation projects for their area of expertise now, and ongoing in the future.
There will be plenty of scope to develop the service into Immunology based on the needs of the service and interest and you will be crucial in driving the direction of travel. The role will offer the opportunity to provide your expertise to patients in a variety of settings. The longer-term aim is for the post holder to contribute to the outpatient clinic delivery.
There will be opportunities for personal and professional development within the role. Links with the school of pharmacy and Newcastle University will present opportunities to be involved in research and education. There is ample opportunity to develop your supervision and management skills in the department. There will be some operational commitments, including weekend working and line management. As a department we are supportive of flexible working and would welcome a discussion about this with any potential applicants.
