Job overview
An opportunity has arisen to join our team of Nuclear Medicine Clinical Technologists based at Darlington Memorial Hospital. You will contribute to the delivery of a comprehensive Nuclear Medicine and DEXA service performing approximately 4200 patient examinations per year.

Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will put patient care at the centre of their work and demonstrate excellent team working skills. Working at other sites within the Department will occasionally be required.
Nuclear Medicine services at Darlington, Durham and Hartlepool are provided by the Northern Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering Directorate of Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals. The team of around 30 technologists, nurses, clinical scientists, administration staff, radiologists and cardiologists work collaboratively across the three sites, and have a strong history of staff development and training. Opportunities for role development and ongoing training will be available for the right candidate.
If you do not have sufficient nuclear medicine experience, you would be supported to study and attain a Post-Graduate Diploma in nuclear medicine, and if you don't hold a current registration then you would also complete the IPEM in-service training scheme to achieve registration as a clinical technologist.
You would be appointed on Annex 21 of Band 6, salary will be 65%, 70% and 75% of the top of Band 6 in your first, second and third years of employment respectively.
Once you have completed training and provided evidence to HR, annex 21 will be removed and you will be paid at Band 6. Failure to complete this within 3 years from date of appointment may result in your employment with the Trust being reviewed.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Principle duties will include:
- Administration of radiopharmaceuticals by oral, IV and intradermal techniques
- Following appropriate protocols to provide accurate and timely clinical results for patients undergoing molecular imaging procedures
- Quality control testing of a wide range of equipment, taking remedial action where required
- Contributing to patient care, including emergency action in the event of patient deterioration
- Communicating complicated procedures and concepts to a wide range of people, including patients or relations who may be confused or distressed
- Performing bone densitometry (DEXA) scans
Job Purpose
- Provides the technical aspects of the nuclear medicine and DEXA service within County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust; based at Darlington Memorial Hospital
- Performs a range of specialist healthcare science activities

Person specification
KNOWLEDGE
Essential criteria
- A good knowledge and understanding of all relevant safety principles, standards and legislation applied to the clinical use of radioactive material & associated physiological measurement equipment in the UK e.g. ECG recording.
- Good knowledge of IT software packages
- Detailed knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology relevant to area of work
Desirable criteria
- Radiopharmaceutical manufacturing and dispensing
- Some knowledge of the physics and engineering principles involved in the operation of complex nuclear medicine equipment
- Knowledge of bone densitometry (DEXA)
SKILLS
Essential criteria
- Patient handling skills of a high order
- Literacy, numeracy and accuracy of a high order
- The ability to work under pressure.
EXPERIENCE
Essential criteria
- Substantial Nuclear Medicine experience.
Desirable criteria
- Practical experience in radiopharmaceutical manufacturing and dispensing.
- Practical experience of bone densitometry (DEXA)
QUALIFICATIONS
Essential criteria
- Degree in Clinical Physiology or Clinical Technology, or a degree or equivalent qualification in another relevant subject e.g. Applied Physics, Radiography or Biomedical Science.
- A post-graduate diploma in Nuclear Medicine or equivalent experience.
- Completion of recognised training scheme
- Expected to be on the Voluntary Register for Clinical Technologists or working towards registration
