Job overview

We are a leading NHS Foundation Hospital Trust at the forefront of delivering high quality acute services at a local, regional and national level.

We are seeking to appoint proactive Band 5 Therapists to join our current dynamic and motivated group of Occupational Therapists on the rotational scheme. 

You will be based within a specialist team at one of our locations within the Trust providing Occupational Therapy assessment and intervention for patients within the defined specialist clinical area, gaining experience of working in a variety of settings and working as an integral member of the multidisciplinary team.

The variety of specialities included on the Band 5 rotation include Medicine (Including Older People’s Medicine) Surgery (Vascular, Plastics and General Surgery), Orthopaedics (Trauma and Elective), Major Trauma Rehabilitation, Loan Equipment, Paediatrics, Neurosciences and Stroke.

Main duties of the job

To identify appropriate patients and carry out OT assessments and interventions to promote independence and facilitate discharge from hospital 

To be responsible for your own caseload

To work as part of the wider multi-disciplinary team to ensure the highest quality, holistic, patient centred care 

To provide support to student practitioners and support staff 

To actively participate in learning opportunities within the department 

You will receive a structured induction and will complete a departmental and trust preceptorship programme. You will receive regular supervision supporting both your clinical and professional development. You will also be able to utilise peer support from the Band 5 support group

Applicants will be encouraged to participate in internal and external learning CPD opportunities

Applicants need to be state registered and should have an excellent knowledge of occupational therapy core skills, well developed communication skills and be able to work as part of a team.

Experience of working with a wide range of physical conditions in an acute physical, fast paced environment is desirable

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To participate in the Band 5 Occupational Therapy rotational scheme which involves working across the Trust in a range of clinical settings for 6 month periods.
  • Band 5 rotational posts are designed to consolidate and build on graduate skills and academic knowledge, giving the newly qualified occupational therapist a broad practical experience of a range of patients and conditions and areas of work.

Person specification

KNOWLEDGE

Essential criteria
  • Basic knowledge of medical conditions and their effect on occupational performance
  • Sound knowledge of OT process within acute setting
  • Basic knowledge of the broad context of health and social care policy, risk assessment and management
  • Basic understanding, that will be developed following a period of in-house induction, of eligibility criteria and procedures/policies relevant to disability equipment, minor housing adaptations
  • Basic understanding, that will be developed following a period of in-house induction, of moving and handling legislation and knowledge of current moving and handling best practice and associated equipment
  • Understanding of professional ethics and their application into practice
  • Basic knowledge of clinical governance
  • Evidence of CPD
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of undertaking research and audit projects
  • Knowledge of team dynamics and team building

  • Use of functional assessment and activity analysis

  • Previous experience on a Band 5 rotational scheme
  • Experience of working with patients with physical disability e.g. stroke, reduced mobility

QUALIFICATION

Essential criteria
  • Degree/Diploma in OT
  • State registered with Health and Care Professions Council
Desirable criteria
  • Member of British Association of Occupational Therapists
