Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Outpatient Clerk to work in the Main Outpatient Department at the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals Trust, which deals with over 280,000 patient appointments per year.  

We are looking for a flexible and enthusiastic candidate who is an excellent team player, well-motivated and capable of working in a busy and challenging environment to join our Outpatient Department. The successful candidate will provide an efficient and friendly reception service to patients and visitors, either in person or by telephone ensuring a high quality of customer care is delivered at all times.  

Departments are located in multiple sites across the Trust  and staff are required to work across all locations, however, will have a main base.

We have three vacancies:

  1. Freeman Main Outpatients
  2. RVI Main Outpatients
  3. Belsay Falls & Syncope Unit at Campus for Ageing and Vitality - this service will be moving to Freeman Main Outpatients at the end of the year.

Main duties of the job

They will be required to work using their own initiative and seek advice where appropriate. 

They will need to possess good communication skills to ensure that high standards of patient care are maintained, with patient queries being addressed in a prompt, effective and polite manner.  

The role requires standard keyboard skills and involves the use  of VDU / IT equipment for long periods on a daily basis.  Previous reception/clerical experience would be desirable but not essential.

  • To provide an effective and efficient out-patient reception and Appointment Booking Centre and administrative service across the organisation ensuring that a high quality of customer care is delivered.
  • To continue to develop and maintain competencies in all areas of work.

Please note it is a requirement of The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust that all successful candidates who require a DBS for the post they have been offered pay for their DBS certificate. The method of payment is a salary deduction from your first month’s pay.
