Job overview

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic Consultant Hepatologist as part of departmental expansion and continued development of specialised services. This post is part of a number of new posts for the department and represents an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic and growing team practicing from a state-of-the-art University hospital.

Main duties of the job

The post attracts a standard 10PA job plan, comprising 7.5 direct clinical care programmed activities, 1.5 basic SPAs, with a further 1.0 PA to be allocated either as SPA or DCC after appointment following discussion with the Clinical Lead, Group Manager, and appointee.  All new Consultant appointments will have 2.5 protected SPA’s for the first 12-months to support personal and professional development alongside mentoring. Thereafter, core SPA allowance will reduce to 1.5 SPA’s, with additional SPA allowance available for award for defined SPA activities (such as educational supervision/ teaching/ rota coordination/ funded research etc) through standard job planning process.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1.    To provide, in collaboration with colleagues, a comprehensive Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Endoscopy, and Nutrition service to patients in Coventry, Warwickshire and beyond.  This includes: ensuring all appropriate waiting lists and waiting times are adhered to; that services are provided in an effective and efficient manner; and that the principles of risk management and clinical governance are maintained at all times.

 

2.    The appointees will be expected to have experience in a wide range of gastroenterological conditions and to work with his/her colleagues to deliver the service in the Trust.  It would be expected that the appointee will see 3 new patients and 8 follow up patients in each outpatient clinic, as per the standard clinic template (or 8NPs if a virtual/2WW clinic).

 

3.    Undertake unselected endoscopy lists booked to a standard template (currently 8-10 points per list due to COVID restrictions; will increase to 10-12 depending upon infection control/staffing).

 

4.    Take responsibility for patients under his/her care.

 

5.    Provide a consultation service and advisory service to other clinical colleagues in other specialties within the Trust and Primary Care.

 

6.    Participate in the development of the gastroenterology service, treatment protocols and guidelines and the greater knowledge in the management of gastroenterology conditions.

 

7.    Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with medical colleagues in other specialties and participate in regular clinical meetings and other post graduate activities.

 

8.    Participate in the gastroenterology on-call rota and the GI Bleed rota to ensure that appropriate emergency services are provided out-of-normal working hours. There is no general medical on call.

 

9.    The post holders will be required to participate fully in the education and training of medical students, trainee doctors, nurses, and allied health care personnel as appropriate. Interest and experience in undergraduate teaching is essential. This includes pre-clinical & clinical students from WMS.

 

10.  Take responsibility for the professional supervision and development of trainee doctors within the specialty.  This will include the appraisal of F2’s and SpRs, and the Certificates of Satisfaction in respect of F1’s.

 

11.  Demonstrate a firm involvement in Clinical Governance, Risk Management and Clinical Audit – including the development and maintenance of appropriate systems and practices to ensure continued safe clinical practice, and regular attendance at the Gastro QIPS meeting.

 

12.  Ensure own practice is up to date; this includes responsibility for own Clinical Professional Development and participating in the Trust’s Performance and Annual Review system.

 

13.  Share responsibility for data protection arising out of the use of computers.

 

14.  Comply with all relevant Trust Policies and Procedures.
