Consultant Physician – General Internal Medicine(Pending RCP Approval)

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

Job overview

Interview is to be scheduled 26th August 2026

Awaiting RCP Approval

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic General Internal Medicine Consultant with a Specialist Interest to join our dynamic department as part of service expansion. This post presents an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic and growing department practicing from a state-of-the-art University hospital.

The successful appointee will join the existing consultant body in delivery of high-quality inpatient and outpatient provision General Internal Medicine services to this large Trust, incorporating the University Hospital in Coventry, and St Cross Hospital in Rugby. The post holder will also be supported to provide care in a specialist service within UHCW. The post holder will be expected to provide patient care as part General Internal Medicine (GIM) medical cover and support GIM on-call. There may be opportunity to support time aligned to world class research or medical educational provision depending on the candidates interest and experience.

The recruitment of the post forms part of the wider Medicine Clinical Group strategy, which would seek to reduce the number of General Medical patients residing in non-medical wards and to centralise any surge in General Medical demand to a designated short stay medical ward.

Main duties of the job

Clinical duties and responsibilities include:

  • Providing, in collaboration with colleagues, a comprehensive General Internal Medicine service to patients in Coventry, Warwickshire and beyond, ensuring all appropriate waiting lists and waiting times are adhered to; that services are provided in an effective and efficient manner; and that the principles of risk management and clinical governance are always maintained.
  • The appointee will be expected to work collaboratively with their colleagues to deliver the service in the Trust but also in the community setting.
  • Undertake unselected ward rounds of the inpatients on outlier wards.
  • Take responsibility for patients under their care.
  • Provide a consultation and advisory service to other clinical colleagues in other specialties within the Trust and Primary Care.
  • Participate in the development of the GIM medicine treatment protocols and guidelines and the greater knowledge in the management of conditions.
  • Participate in the General Medicine on-call rota and ensure that appropriate emergency services are provided out-of-normal working hours.
  • Participate in the education and training of medical students, trainee doctors, nursing, and other personnel as appropriate. Interest and experience in undergraduate teaching is essential. This includes pre-clinical & clinical students from WMS.
