Job overview
To develop and maintain the Alcohol Care Team (ACT) within the UHCW trust. To assess, plan, implement and evaluate specialist nursing service provision for patients with alcohol-related health issues and their families. Recognising NICE guidance compliant specialist protocols for the management of alcohol-related ill health.
The Alcohol Care Lead Nurse is responsible for the management of the UHCW Alcohol Care Team (ACT), supporting the 4 band 6 senior alcohol specialist nurses in further developing and promoting the ACT within the Trust. They will work closely with the clinical teams throughout the trust to provide expert advice on the management of alcohol withdrawal and alcohol related addiction issues.
The ACT Lead Nurse will be a professional role model advancing evidence based clinical practice in the speciality of alcohol misuse. They will evidence the effectiveness of the ACT and will work with the clinical toxicologists and clinicians to publish outcomes.
The Lead Nurse raises the profile of the UHCW ACT to a national level and work with regional leads including alcohol programme managers in Public Health England. They will participate in national alcohol working party groups, influencing national policy and present at regional and national conferences (i.e. BSG) and webinars.
Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.
Main duties of the job
Working with the Drug and Alcohol Steering Group they will act as a regional expert advisor on ACTs, advising and supporting other clinical settings including GP surgeries and the Alcohol Care Team Innovation and Optimisation Network (ACTION).
- To establish mechanisms within the hospital and into the community to manage identification and appropriate responses to alcohol-related harm.
- To accept referrals from the multi-professional team for patients whose ill health may be alcohol-related and to provide specialist nursing support for patients and significant others in a timely and appropriate manner that optimises clinical management of alcohol related problems. This will include supporting acute alcohol withdrawal in the hospital.
- To have responsibility for the daily management and supervision of colleagues in the Alcohol Care Team as well as development and delivery of robust educational interventions that promote best practice in the management of patients experiencing, or at risk of alcohol-related ill health.
- To develop National Institute for Health & Clinical Excellence compliant specialist protocols for the management of alcohol-related ill health.
- Provision of clear clinical leadership in the delivery of specialist alcohol services for patients with alcohol-related problems.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Promotion of positive attitudes and responses toward patients with alcohol-related ill health.
- Development of the ACT service including management of team members and of the team’s budget and resources.
- Development of specialist protocols and Design and delivery of structured training programmes to raise alcohol awareness among hospital staff and to equip colleagues to respond appropriately to patients experiencing, or at risk of alcohol-related ill health.
- Development of effective ways of working and the creation of strong partnerships and relationships with all stakeholders to support measurable reduction in alcohol-related harm in Coventry and Warwickshire.
- Participate in regional and national alcohol related groups and forums such as the Midlands Alcohol forum and the Strategic Drug and Alcohol partnership meeting.
- Develop relationships with regional and national alcohol leads including project managers at Public Health England and NHS England/Improvement to promote the work of the UHCW ACT and influence regional and national policy.
- Act as a regional expert advisor on alcohol care teams, advising and supporting other NHS Trusts.
- Participate in regional and national alcohol working groups to influence national policy on alcohol related issues including prevention and treatment.
- Raise the profile of the UHCW ACT by presenting at national conferences and national webinars.
- Undertake and support fellow professionals in alcohol related audits and research and publish these outcomes.
- Act as a specialist resource informing clinical teams of national trends and innovations in specialist and professional practice.
- To assist in the line management of the Hepatology CNS team, ensuring that professional standards/local protocols are maintained.
- To promote the University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust as a National Leader and a centre of excellence in Hepatology and engage in research.
- Provide and facilitate an expert level of care to patients with hepatology conditions, including physical examination, initiation of treatment, investigations, and interventional therapies.
- Liaise with members of the multi-disciplinary team throughout the Trust, including referring District General Hospitals and General Practitioners
- Liaise with District General Hospitals to ensure a timely and efficient pathway for referrals and organise transfer when appropriate in liaison with consultants and bed co-ordinators.
- Lead formal ward rounds with consultants and junior medical staff, using these as a teaching forum for members of the multi-disciplinary team.
- Participate in opportunities to share good practice and innovations with colleagues both locally and nationally.
- Take a lead role in the development of new patient care pathways for patients with liver disease across acute and primary care settings.
