Job overview
We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic Midwife to undertake the role of Deputy to the Lead Antenatal Screening Midwife. The post holder will have a key role working within Antenatal and Newborn Screening team, promoting and maintaining services in line with current national recommendations. To provide clinical leadership and management support, developing and evaluating best practice within the service. The post-holder will deputise for the department manager as required.
Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.
Main duties of the job
- To maintain and develop screening services within the hospital and community supported by the Antenatal and Newborn Screening Lead.
- To assist in formulating policies / protocols guidelines in line with National Screening Committee Guidance.
- To ensure that antenatal screening test results are acted upon appropriately and in a timely manner.
- Respond to patient and staff enquiries and requests for screening information. Provide specialist advice and support for students, midwives and medical staff regarding screening issues.
- Effectively communicate, counsel and support families prior to, during and following their screening choices.
- Assist the antenatal screening coordinator in the audit and monitoring of the screening programmes.
- Accountable for own actions in accordance with the Code of Professional Conduct. Will contribute to corporate objectives, acting within local, Trust and statutory guidelines and policies at all times.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Effectively communicate information regarding clinical decisions, policy and care pathways to patients/carers and the multi-professional team.
- A skilled practitioner and clinical leader providing support to the management team, participating in service/policy development.
- Responsible for clinical assessment of a group of patients and management of a team, ensuring appropriate care is planned, implemented and evaluated/audited.
- Responsible for the maintenance and development of her/his clinical skills
- Organisation of cross-departmental/organisational activities including HR, resource, and bleep-holder responsibilities as appropriate.
- Act up for antenatal screening midwife in his/her absence
- Demonstrate highly technical and/or practical skills to ensure optimum patient management including; complex patient monitoring; equipment management and frequent administration of invasive tests/procedures.
- Develop and educate staff, participating in mentorship and appraisal as required.
- Utilise and ensure others utilise IT systems to secure accurate and timely patient, workforce and resource data available.
- Maintain a clean, safe environment ensuring adherence to trust standards of cleanliness
- Manage expected and unexpected clinical events requiring varying levels of physical effort according to patient dependency/clinical need.
- Support patients, carers and others during difficult situations arising in the clinical area, e.g. imparting bad news or following an unexpected event.
- To participate in teaching and preparation for parenthood sessions.
- Develop a knowledge of the Child Protection strategy and its implementation
- Promote and monitor adherence to Health and Safety and Trust policy designed to protect healthcare staff and service users from known hazards.
- To form part of the maternity escalation policy and participate in hospital on call’s within the unit.
