Job overview

The neurosurgery department is an established department with a team of eleven consultants with subspecialties in Neurotrauma & CSF, Neuro-Oncology, Vascular, Pituitary, Skull base and Complex Spine. The department provides Neurosurgical services to the adult population of Coventry, Warwickshire and North Worcestershire.

UHCW is a designated Major Trauma Centre for Coventry, Warwickshire and Northampton, a designated cancer centre and hyper acute Stroke unit. Relevant to this post, UHCW has a busy Neurotrauma and Hydrocephalus service and offers the full range of surgical management from decompressive procedures, shunts and endoscopic work.

 

This post is aimed at a peri-CCT Neurosurgeon who would like to gain a further period     of development in the sub-specialty of Neurotrauma and CSF disorders in preparation for a consultant role.

 

The role also gives exposure and opportunity to engage in specific research and audit programs. This post has been created aimed at improving the quality of care for patients with CSF disorders and Neuro-trauma. The post supports a 1:10 on call rota  for general neurosurgery.

Main duties of the job

·         Management of elective and emergency Cranial Trauma and Hydrocephalus surgery patients admitted under their care.

·         Attend morning handover Meetings at 0745hrs.

·         Theatre attendance and independent operating consummate with level of experience including unselected emergency cases. The successful candidate will gain excellent exposure and opportunities to develop surgical skills.

·         Lead daily ward rounds including ITU and Outliers with junior doctors to guide the inpatient management of neurosurgical and spinal patients.

·         Undertake appropriate audits in Trauma and CSF disorders.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Fellow will be expected to have a specialist interest in gaining experience in cranial trauma and CSF disorders, work closely with ITU, and get involved in research activities.  

The post holder will be expected to take part in the Multi-Disciplinary meetings including weekly trauma MDT and Neurosurgery MDT.

The post holder should demonstrate the ability to manage clinics independently and will be working with Mr.Rahim Hussain and Mr.Soumya Mukherjee.

Facilitate timely review and discharge of patients

·         Participate in the consultation service and advisory service to other clinical colleagues in other specialties within the Trust and Primary Care.

·         Participate in the development of the Neuro-trauma and CSF disorders (NPH,IIH and Chiari Malformation & Syringomyelia) service, treatment protocols and guidelines and the greater knowledge in the management of spinal conditions.

·         Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with medical colleagues in other specialties and participate in regular clinical meetings and other post graduate activities.

·         Participate in the on-call rota (includes prospective cover) so that appropriate emergency services are provided out-of-normal working hours.

·         Take responsibility for the professional supervision and development of trainee doctors within the specialty.

·         Develop and maintain good communications with General Practitioners and appropriate external agencies.

·         Demonstrate a firm involvement in Clinical Governance, Risk Management and Clinical Audit – this will include the development and maintenance of appropriate systems and practices to ensure continued safe clinical practice. Ensure attendance at appropriate governance meetings

·         Ensure own practice is up-to-date; this will include taking responsibility for own Clinical Professional Development and participating in the Trust’s Performance and Annual Review system.

·         Share responsibility for data protection arising out of the use of computers.
