Job overview

An experienced practitioner rotating through the Radiotherapy Department providing clinical technical services using a range of highly specialist Radiotherapy Treatment and planning equipment. The postholder will work with and deputise for the Band 7 Radiographer managing the caseload, staff and equipment of their designated unit, maintaining associated records and delivering evidence based, patient centred care. 

The department provides clinical placements for student Radiographers and the postholder will be expected to participate fully in the supervision, training and assessing of students.

Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP. 

Main duties of the job

  1. Demonstrates safe & effective practice in the planning, delivery and on-treatment verification processes (in- vivo dosimetry, image acquisition and analysis) of radiotherapy.
  2. Evaluate results of these processes and take appropriate action in line with department procedures
  3. Operate Radiotherapy equipment delivering treatment safely and accurately within the tolerances defined for the technique.
  4. Records all activities carefully, and accurately consistent with legislation, policies and procedures.
  5. Understands and undertakes role as Operator under IR(ME)R
  6. Identify and undertake appropriate pre-treatment processes including:
    a)    patient scheduling 
    b)    calculation of radiation treatment prescriptions/plans
    c)    data input and screen check of prescription/ plan parameters
    d)    transfer of images  
    e)    checking of complex treatment prescriptions.
    f)    collation of all treatment accessories and requirements prior to the patients first visit 
  7. Work as part of Pre-Treatment team to acquire appropriate localisation CT planning scans.
  8. Document all mandatory patient IRMER statements, e.g., pregnancy status and laterality. 
  9. Ensure that all patient setup information is recorded accurately and unambiguously.
  10. Evaluate and respond appropriately to information given.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Provide written and verbal information to patients and carers on all aspects of Radiotherapy treatment and its associated side effects and reactions ensuring that explanations are appropriate to the patient’s comprehension and level of understanding  
  • Monitor patient’s medical condition and progress during treatment recording and reporting any significant changes to the appropriate consultant or deputy   
  • Plan and implement an appropriate supportive care package for patients liaising with other departments, professionals and agencies to optimise support before during and after treatment.
  • Educate, motivate and reassure patients to ensure compliance with treatment regimens assessing the patients’ physical and emotional state daily to ensure that it is appropriate to proceed with treatment.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • BSc Radiotherapy or equivalent • HCPC registered • Post-grad courses or study • Demonstrable CPD and evidence of using learning to improve practice
Desirable criteria
  • • Leadership course

Experience

Essential criteria
  • • NHS experience as a therapeutic radiographer • Experience working in both treatment and pre-treatment/CT • Experience of managing staff or students
Desirable criteria
  • • Acting up experience at band 6 level • Experience with Elekta linacs and Mosaiq • Experience with Canon CT • Contrast trained • Experience of using SGRT

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • • Knowledge of a range of radiotherapy techniques • Knowledge of radiotherapy side effects and associated patient care • Knowledge of associated treatments in cancer management • Awareness of IR(ME)R regulations and their implication for radiotherapy practice • Knowledge of current national guidelines for radiotherapy
Desirable criteria
  • • Offers innovative ideas for practice or service development • Knowledge of future developments in radiotherapy
