Job overview

To actively provide and support the further development of first-class ophthalmology services for the  Trust, working in collaboration with clinical colleagues in all disciplines to provide an integrated  service for patients. 
 
The post will be for 10 programmed activities per week, giving adequate time for SPA duties. The  working week has 8 sessions devoted to direct clinical care.  Two SPA sessions of which 1.5PA is for to support CPD, audit, teaching and training and 0.5 SPA allocated according to role. Appointee is expected of continuing  professional development (CPD) in the SPA time given to fulfil Appraisal and Revalidation. Travel  time will be considered, and adequate lunch break is provided. 

The department has a regular commitment to audit, with 10 sessions per year committed to audit and clinical governance. Teaching is an integral part of the unit, with junior doctors, medical students, orthoptic and optometry students rotating through the department. The candidate will be expected to  participate in Audits, seminars and lectures for medical students, junior doctors and other professional or lay groups with health interests.  

Main duties of the job

We are looking to appoint a Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist with an Interest in Medical Retina to join the Ophthalmology team at UHCW NHS Trust.

The post holder will actively provide and support the further development of first class ophthalmology services for the Trust, working in collaboration with clinical colleagues in all disciplines to provide an integrated service for patients.

This post is principally to the Medical Retina service along with three other medical retina specialists. The post will be for 10 programmed activities per week, giving adequate time for SPA duties.

The department has a regular commitment to audit, with 10 sessions per year committed to audit and clinical governance. Teaching is an integral part of the unit, with junior doctors, medical students, Orthoptic and optometry students rotating through the department.

The candidate will be expected to participate in the current on call rota which is 1 in 10, third on call.

  • Completed Higher Specialist Training in Ophthalmology.  Extensive training and experience in management of medical retina disorders and uveitis
Desirable criteria
  • Post CCT fellowship training in complimentary speciality eg: medical retina  Should have received training in educational supervision as defined by the GMC. Specialisation that complements the UHCW Ophthalmology Department needs

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Awareness of current issues affecting the NHS & UK Higher Education  Should have received training in clinical supervision as defined by the GMC.
Desirable criteria
  • Post CCT fellowship training in complimentary speciality eg: medical retina  Should have received training in educational supervision as defined by the GMC.  Specialisation that complements the UHCW Ophthalmology Department needs

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Audit & research skills.  Track record of publications in peer reviewed scientific & clinical journals.  Ability to lead & co-ordinate clinical teams.  Experience of teaching at postgraduate levels  Experience of managing a medical retina Service  Experience of team working in a multidisciplinary medical retina team  Experience of research in medical retina  Experience of running a trainee teaching programme in medical retina care
Desirable criteria
  • Clinical leadership and management experience in developing and delivering new services.  Involvement in clinical leadership roles such a participation in QIPP projects & service improvement projects.  Evidence of promoting excellence in areas of research.  Management innovation experience
