Main duties of the job

To provide a specialist service to the children, young people as well as their parents & carers who are suffering with respiratory conditions within the acute trust. Within this post you will work as part of the respiratory Nursing team, supported by a Band 7 Team leader whilst working in collaboration with the Paediatric Respiratory consultant. The post holder will work across the UHCW and Rugby St Cross site.

The post holder will be involved in developing and delivering expert patient-centred care based on local and national guidance. Care delivered will include patient assessment, planning and implementing of specialist care, provision of advice/support and education in collaboration with the wider MDT including child protection/safeguarding teams.

The post holder will be involved in audit and research, assist in leading a small team, participate in network meetings and provide education to medical and nursing staff within the unit in order to improve quality and enhance care delivery.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To support/participate and deputise if required in Consultant and Nurse-led clinics working within guidelines agreed by the respiratory care team
  • To develop the knowledge and skills to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care for respiratory patients in secondary care and using this understanding to improve the individual patient’s understanding of their respiratory condition and management. Identify their needs; provide education, monitoring and support
  • To act as an advocate for and support the patient and their carers. Be the key worker in co-ordinating the efforts of the multidisciplinary team.  
  • Be aware of the key therapies available to these patients and be conversant with their usage ensuring patients and professionals have sufficient knowledge to deliver safe and effective care.
  • Undertake a holistic assessment of patients needs encompassing physical, emotional, social and spiritual issues, including the needs of their family and carers. Support patients exploring the use of alternative therapies

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • Current Paediatric Professional Registration – RNC or equivalent • Evidence of continuous professional development, with courses relevant to area of work • Degree level education • Study at level 6 (degree/ diploma)
Desirable criteria
  • • Health assessment module or willingness to undertake

Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Evidence of previous acute Paediatric Clinical experience • Experience of working in the speciality of respiratory care • Experience of multi-agency working • Research and clinical audit experience
Desirable criteria
  • • Knowledge of Health Promotion techniques • Understanding of risk management

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • • Knowledge of the Code of Professional Conduct • A knowledgeable clinician with the ability to apply evidence based practice • Able to apply evidence to practice
Desirable criteria
  • • A good understanding of current issues relating to the NHS • An understanding of the importance of patient and public involvement • Specialist knowledge
