Biomedical Scientist AFC Band 5 
Hours: 37.5 per week

The Histology laboratory CWPS is looking for a suitably qualified and experienced state registered BMS to join our busy and friendly team at University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire. 

Applicants must be HCPC registered.  Experience of working within a busy Histology department is desirable.

Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP. 

Main duties of the job

You must be able to support the provision of a full histopathology diagnostic service, which will include BMS cut-up, embedding, microtomy, H&E staining, special stains, and immunohistochemistry. The successful candidate must demonstrate commitment to improvements to quality and standards within their area of work.

The laboratory operates a full rotation system through all sections. Training and encouragement is provided for CPD and other personal development.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Due to the demands of the service, a flexible approach to working hours is expected, although this will be restricted to 37.5 hours per week. The UHCW laboratory is open for an extended working day between 7am and 7pm Monday-Saturday. However, as the service develops this may change and the successful candidate will be employed on a 24/7 contract.

Coventry and Warwickshire Pathology is an emerging Network formally established in October 2007 following the Acute Services Review in Coventry and Warwickshire. The service is based on the hospital sites at Coventry (University Hospitals of Coventry and Warwickshire), Nuneaton (George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust) and Warwick (South Warwickshire Hospital).   • Perform daily routine and specialised diagnostic services on patient and environmental samples containing potentially infectious material. This will be done on a rotational basis using manual and automated techniques to exacting medical and scientific standards according to standard operating procedures
  • Perform daily interpretation of diagnostic investigations. Know how to proceed in the event of technical / analytical non conformity and when to inform the line manager
  • Accurate and timely entry of data onto the laboratory computer system and/or automated analysers using a VDU and keyboard workstation
  • As appropriate record reports for authorisation in electronic form and / or verbally to persons authorised to receive them
  • Quality check outputs including maintaining necessary internal record
  • Participate in external and internal quality assurance schemes and vertical and horizontal audits as directed by senior staff
  • Work to meet laboratory performance targets as directed by senior staf
  • Under supervision, develop and investigate new techniques as required by the changing needs of the service
  • To regularly inform and discuss progress of training towards a post registration specialist competence portfolio, with the laboratory training officer and other senior staff as appropriate
