Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Therapy Assistant to join our outpatient neurological therapy team within the Rehabilitation Unit at UHCW.

The team provides therapeutic intervention for patients with long term neurological conditions and includes Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, a therapy assistant practitioner and Clinical Psychologist. The team has strong links with both the MS clinic, the Movement Disorder clinic and the West Midlands Parkinson’s Regional Network.

Main duties of the job

Under the direction and supervision of a Registered Therapist the post holder will be expected to:

  • Carry out activities with patients as part of their therapy treatment.
  • To contribute to the effective and efficient running of the Therapy service.
  • Assist in the administration and clerical duties of the department

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Treat patients, who have been assessed by a therapist, following protocols/treatment plans that have been delegated to them e.g. assisting with stair assessments, mobility assessments, activities of daily living, and individual activities as part of ongoing treatment. Undertaking tasks that they have been trained to carry out.
  • To be able to recognise change in patients’ condition and report findings to most appropriate person.
  • To work effectively as a member of a team in carrying out department based therapeutic activities.
  • To work with a qualified member of therapy staff to treat patients.
  • To complete competencies in appropriate rotation/area where available.
  • Provide the walking aid appropriate to the patient, ensuring their safety.
  • To accompany qualified therapists on home visits.
  • Following qualified therapy instructions to continue treatments such as washing and dressing practice, kitchen practice, mobility practice and stair practice etc.
  • Undertake delegated tasks to contribute to the safe and smooth running of the service.
  • To maintain the department and equipment in a clean and orderly manner, bringing to the notice of relevant people anything that is damaged/worn.
  • Plan and prioritise own workload to ensure efficient working.
  • To report effectively to the Therapist on patient’s performance/ progress with treatment or give reasons why a treatment was not carried out.
  • To answer the telephone in a polite manner, taking messages and relaying them in a timely manner to the appropriate person.
  • To ensure that accurate, legible up to date written/ electronic patient related records and activity data are maintained in accordance with Professional, Departmental and Trust Standards.
  • To adhere to the Department and the Trust’s Code of Conduct and all other relevant policies and procedures.
  • In line with Trust guidelines review and reflect on own practice and performance through regular participation in annual review.
  • To ensure that areas are well maintained and comply with health and safety guidelines, ensuring the safe use of equipment and storage of materials.
  • To exercise good personal time management, punctuality and consistent reliable attendance.
  • To be responsible for maintaining stock, advising on resources to carry out the job.
  • To use resources in the most cost-effective manner.
