Job overview

As part of an overarching restructure of the Radiography management team at UHCW an exciting opportunity has arisen for a suitably qualified and experienced  Lead Reporting Radiographer to join the team.

We are looking for a dynamic, enthusiastic, and highly motivated individual to set and maintain standards within the plain film service.

As an expert in your field you will lead and manage the advanced practitioner reporting radiographer team and have managerial responsibility for the plain film service at the UHCW site.

Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP. 

Main duties of the job

  • To work collaboratively with other operational and clinical senior managers within the Imaging Group Management team and beyond, to develop, support and deliver operational and strategic objectives. 
  • To lead and manage the team of reporting radiographers, providing guidance and mentoring where needed.
  • Provide clinical reports for a range of imaging examinations, suggesting a diagnosis or differential diagnosis, advising on follow-up and taking appropriate action when this is required urgently, offering consultancy regarding radiographic diagnosis when approached by clinicians / practitioners that require advice.
  • To provide leadership to the plain film service (UHCW site) and maintain the highest level of expertise and competency within the modality. Perform a range of diagnostic radiography procedures as required throughout the department, managing patient priority as appropriate.
  • To contribute to future departmental development including service and business planning and equipment procurement.
  • Set and maintain a high professional and technical standard of work and ensure all staff in the reporting service maintain similar standard

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Lead peer and self-audit amongst the reporting radiographer team and maintain accurate records and encourage reflective process.
  • Undertake data assessment to monitor reporting turnaround times, reporting capacity and other indications, advising the management team as required.
  • Conduct research and lead audits to support and develop the reporting service.
  • To monitor and control finance and is accountable for expenditure in own areas of responsibility. To manage a timely efficient and cost-effective service within allocated resources. Act as budget holder responsible for stock control and purchase of consumables and necessary equipment for the service within budgetary limits.
  • Provide accurate written reports on a range of imaging examinations and referral sources, suggesting diagnosis or differential diagnosis and follow-up action where appropriate.
  • Provide verbal clinical advice to radiographers, clinicians and other practitioners when approached. Act as a point of advice for imaging referrers and patients.
  • Assess the clinical justification of radiology referrals in line with both national regulations and local protocols.
  • Ensure the provision of the highest standards of patient care and contribute to the management of the Radiology Department.
  • Be an advocate for reporting radiographer services and contribute to patient care and organisational operations, whilst demonstrating excellent clinical expertise and knowledge.
  • Work closely within a multidisciplinary team providing a high-quality radiology service to patients and staff.
  • Ensure Clinical Governance protocols are complied with, records are maintained as required and corrective action is taken where required. Working collaboratively with Radiology Governance Superintendent and Clinical Audit Lead to ensure patient safety and quality of care within own specialist area (Governance and audit). 
  • Be accountable for achieving quality and performance indicators, reporting to Imaging Management Board on specific KPI’s for the plain film service.
  • Keep abreast of current imaging developments/issues and bring to the attention of the Professional Lead Radiographer / Head of Operations any issues requiring action.
  • Provide line management of staff within your specialty area(s) including contributing to staff rotas, recruitment, appraisal, CPD and performance, inclusive of workforce planning and skill mix reviews. 
  • Be responsible for ensuring suitable arrangements exist for the training program within the specialty modalities for Radiology registrars, radiographers and radiographic students including those who visit the department on work experience
