Job overview
A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Speech and Language Therapist to join the team as Speech and Language Therapy Service Manager at UHCW.
This is an exciting time to join the UHCW Speech and Language Therapy department with services evolving as Coventry community adult services have recently joined the UHCW envelope. Alongside a small clinical caseload, the post holder will be responsible for the management and development of the SLT adult services at UHCW. The remit of this post is predominantly across inpatient services but will include supporting some outpatient SLT services too. You will be joining a Trust which actively nurtures and encourages innovation and service development, and you will be supported by the Head of Dietetics and Speech and Language Therapy to identify and facilitate service development and quality improvement opportunities. Your ongoing learning and development are a priority and will be actively supported by the Trust.
The Speech and Language Therapy Department is lucky to be supported by a visible senior group management team and AHP faculty, and you will also have the opportunity to liaise closely with other clinical service managers as needed. You will work closely with experienced band 7 SLT team leads.
Main duties of the job
The Speech and Language Therapy department currently consists of 20 qualified staff and 5 Speech and Language Therapy Assistant Practitioners who work across acute, stroke, critical care and head and neck services. We are welcomed our first SLT apprentice in January 2025.
The department is proud to encourage staff members to undertake research posts whenever possible and we have had staff presenting their research at various national and international conferences.
- Supporting the Head of Dietetics and SLT in the delivery of performance of the SLT service against financial, trust and group priorities and targets.
- Supporting the development and delivery of the clinical governance programme and working alongside senior nursing and other AHP colleagues on quality initiatives
- Responsible for the local interpretation and application of clinical and professional policies.
- Key link with local universities and the SLT practice educator for the strategic management of pre-registration placement education
- To provide line management for more junior Speech and Language Therapist
- To hold a small clinical caseload (within your area of clinical expertise) and provide ad hoc additional clinical support as needed

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Manage the operational performance of the SLT service (predominantly across inpatients but may include some outpatient services) to support an efficient and cost-effective delivery of national, trust and group priorities and targets ensuring robust implementation of service objectives and clear communication across and within clinical teams.
- Regularly review establishments to ensure an appropriate skill mix by managing resources to achieve equitable, comprehensive services across all clinical areas within financial resources.
- When required, represent SLT at Group and Trust level to ensure planning and delivery of SLT services adheres to group plans and targets.
- In collaboration with the Dietetic and SLT Head of Service, ensure the delivery of interdisciplinary working within relevant areas and provide appropriate professional support as required.
- Investigate and provide timely and detailed responses to complaints, clinical adverse events and untoward incidents. Involve staff and or patients and implement strategies to reduce reoccurrence and promote quality.
- Ensure resources are effectively managed, in order to support the Head of Service to ensure that financial targets are met, and financial balances adhered to. Be an authorised signatory for the SLT Budget (and on occasions for the Dietetic budget too).
- Interpret and implement HR strategies and policies within the service in order to achieve compliance with trust policies and procedures.
- Responsible through clinical/team leads for co-ordinating and delivering the SLT service across UHCW and Rugby St Cross sites.
- Responsible through clinical leads to ensure that a system for training, supervision and appraisal of all qualified, unqualified and undergraduate staff is in place. To ensure that all professional, clinical and departmental standards are adhered to.

- To ensure that all staff have an up-to-date job plan
