We are seeking a motivated and experienced Locum Acute Medicine Consultant to join our dynamic team at George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust.
This role offers the opportunity to provide senior clinical leadership on the Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) Unit and join a multidisciplinary team on the Acute Medical Unit (AMU). You will play a key role in delivering timely, high-quality care to patients with acute medical illness, whilst helping shape and develop pathways to improve patient flow and outcomes.
Main duties of the job
This role is ideal for a Consultant with a passion for Acute Medicine, who thrives in a multidisciplinary environment and wants to make a real impact on patient care. You will have the opportunity to lead and develop the SDEC service, contributing to the future direction of acute care at the Trust.
We offer a supportive and collaborative working environment, with opportunities to engage in teaching, audit, and service development. You will work alongside a motivated team of clinicians, nurses, and allied health professionals, delivering care for a diverse patient population in a community-based hospital with strong links to the University of Warwick.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The purpose of this role is to support and further develop the Acute Medicine service, providing daily consultant-level review of patients with acute medical illness and senior decision-making to ensure timely and optimal care.
The successful candidate will join the existing acute medical team and contribute to shaping the future of the department, delivering high-quality care to the population.
- Lead and provide day-to-day clinical care on the Acute Medical Unit (AMU) and Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC).
- Develop and improve patient pathways, with a focus on ambulatory care pathways.
- Contribute to service development, quality improvement, and clinical governance across Acute Medicine.
- Supervise, tech, and support junior doctors, trainees, and the wider multidisciplinary team.
- Work collaboratively with the Emergency Department and other medical specialities to ensure seamless, high-quality patient care
- Maintain compliance with Trust policies, legal, and regulatory requirements

Person specification
Experience and Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Demonstrated experience in Acute Medicine, including assessment, investigation, and management of patients with acute medical illness
- Understanding of Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) and Ambulatory Care Pathways
- Knowledge of clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement processes
- Awareness of NHS policies, standards, and regulatory requirements relevant to acute medical practice
- Completion or near completion of Specialist Training Programme in General Medicine
Qualification(s) and Professional Training
Essential criteria
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
- Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) or equivalent
- Advanced Life Support (ALS) Certification
- Eligibility for inclusion on the Specialist Register within 12 months of interview
Skills and Abilities

- Ability to lead, communicate, liaise, and negotiate effectively with colleagues and stakeholders
- Ability to advise on the efficient and smooth running of a specialist service
