Responsible for the assessment, planning implementation and evaluation of nursing care for a specified group of patients as delegated by senior nursing staff, involving patients and carers where appropriate. 

Acts as a team leader, delegating appropriate tasks and supervising the standard of care delivered by unqualified staff and learner nurses in the ward team.

We are looking to recruit Post Preceptorship Registered Nurses with experience or an interest in Surgery.

Main duties of the job

1.1 Deliver a high standard of nursing care without direct supervision, based upon a sound evidence base.

1.2 Undertakes and documents a comprehensive, systematic and accurate nursing assessment of the physical, social and spiritual needs of the patient where appropriate.

1.3 Creates and utilises opportunities to promote health and well-being of patients in their care.

1.4 Manage a group of patients throughout a shift as delegated by nurse charge.

1.5 Working within the N.M.C Guidelines and Trust Policies recognising limits of their competence.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1.0 Clinical

1.1 Deliver a high standard of nursing care without direct supervision, based upon a sound evidence base.

1.2 Undertakes and documents a comprehensive, systematic and accurate nursing assessment of the physical, social and spiritual needs of the patient where appropriate.

1.3 Creates and utilises opportunities to promote health and well-being of patients in their care.

1.4 Manage a group of patients throughout a shift as delegated by nurse charge.

1.5 Working within the N.M.C Guidelines and Trust Policies recognising limits of their competence

2.0. Managerial

2.1 In the absence of senior colleagues manages the Ward/Department on occasions without direct supervision when competent to do so.

2.2 Use computerised systems to support the provision of patient care and treatment.

2.3 Work within Clinical Governance Standards and Trust Policies.

2.4 Ensure that concerns and complaints from patients, visitors or colleagues are resolved where possible and reported to the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse.

2.5 To be conversant with all Trust Emergency Procedures.

2.6 Comply with Trust Manual Handling Policy.

3.0 Education and Training

3.1 With the support of the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse maintains personal and professional development in line with the N.M.C. requirements.

3.2 Participates in the supervision and professional development of Health Care Support Workers and Learner Nurses.

3.3 Participate in audits to monitor the standards of patient care.

3.4 Participates in the Trust’s appraisal System

3.5 To take responsibility for own personal development raising any training requirements.

4.0 Professional

4.1 Ensures that the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse is informed of any professional concerns at the earliest opportunity.

 4.2 Ensure that requirements for NMC Registration are adhered to.

 4.3 Ensures current registration with NMC.

Relationships

·       Liaises with Ward/Department Team, other Wards and Departments as appropriate to ensure patients receive optimum care.

Special Requirements

·        Frequent exposure to blood and bodily fluids.

·       Responsible for identifying risks, assisting and managing risk assessment in line with Trust policy.

Essential criteria
  • Undertake wide experience during training in an acute setting
  • Able to demonstrate clinical knowledge, skills and expertise
  • Demonstrates the use of evidence-based practice in the implementation of change
  • Knowledge and application of NMC Code of Conduct
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of Research or Clinical Audit

Qualification(s) and Professional Training
