Main duties of the job

  • The post holder will work alongside a team of A&E consultants, Middle grade Registrars, Junior doctors, SHOs, GP Trainees, FY1, FY2, Clinical Fellows, Medical students, GPs, ACPs, ENPs, Nurses, HCAs, managerial and operational staff etc.
  • We at George Eliot hospital offer a combination of consultant-led and consultant-delivered safe patient care. The specialty doctor will be the doctor in charge of the department at night with a consultant on call from home after midnight. The successful candidate will be working on the Middle Grade rota and accountable to the EM Consultants.
  • We expect for the candidate to have good leadership skills, ability to manage the Department, including flow through the ED. The successful candidate will have a dedicated mentor (Clinical Supervisor) and dedicated SPA time for training, CPDs and quality improvement projects, plus budgeted study leave days.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Leadership and Supervision

  • Act as a senior clinical leader within the Emergency Department, providing guidance, mentorship, and support to less experienced team members.
  • Participate in departmental handovers, contributing to the efficient allocation of resources and prioritization of cases.
  • Collaborate with the Clinical Lead and senior management to address operational challenges and implement departmental policies.

Education and Training

  • Deliver teaching and training sessions to junior medical staff, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Participate in formal and informal teaching programs, including simulation-based training and induction for new staff.
  • Support the continued professional development of the multidisciplinary team.

Quality Improvement and Governance

  • Contribute to clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives, and research projects within the Emergency Department.
  • Ensure compliance with national and local clinical guidelines, protocols, and governance frameworks.
  • Participate in root cause analyses, morbidity and mortality reviews, and the implementation of action plans to improve patient safety.

Qualification(s) and Professional Training

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration (with a license to practice)
  • MBBS/MBChB or Equivalent
  • ALS or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • MRCEM/FRCEM Primary/ MRCP or equivalent
  • APLS/PILS
  • ATLS

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working in Emergency Department for at least ten years.
  • Able to demonstrate competence in all aspects of Emergency Medicine
Desirable criteria
  • Formal postgraduate speciality training
  • Experience of shop floor management

Skills and Abilities
