  • An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Radiographer to join the IR team here at GEH.
  • Applicants will be performing all manner of Interventional procedures including Vascular, non-vascular, Cardiology, Endoscopy and Barium services.
  • Applicants must be HCPC registered with relevant UK experience.
  • The post is 30 hours per week and there is no commitment to out-of-hours or weekend services.

Main duties of the job

  • To carry out clinical and administrative work as a senior member of a small, specialised team, performing general and fluoroscopy and angiographic procedures for clinicians, within agreed protocols
  • Liaising with wards and other departments
  • To perform fluoroscopic and general examinations to the highest standard in accordance with department protocols and guidelines, using professional judgment, skills and experience; is not directly supervised, is always accountable for own professional actions, including in emergency and lone working situations.
  • As a department we provide a range of imaging services for more than 300,000 people across Nuneaton & Bedworth, North Warwickshire, Southwest Leicestershire and North Coventry.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To carry out clinical and administrative work as a senior member of a small, specialised team, performing general and fluoroscopy and angiographic procedures for clinicians, within agreed protocols
  • Liaising with wards and other departments
  • Will also contribute to quality assurance programme and be involved in audit/research where appropriate
  • Provides evidence of maintaining professional competencies and continuing professional development as required by Health Professions Council for state registration
  • To perform fluoroscopic and general examinations to the highest standard in accordance with department protocols and guidelines, using professional judgment, skills and experience; is not directly supervised, is always accountable for own professional actions, including in emergency and lone working situations
  • Giving information and advice where appropriate
  • To be part of the rotation between the areas maintaining expertise on all equipment
  • To prioritise workload according to clinical need
  • To deputise in the absence of the Lead Radiographer
  • To maintain high ethical and professional standards in appearance and attitude as within the guidelines published by the College of Radiographers and adhering to the statement of conduct as approved by the Radiographers Board, Health Professions Council
  • To maintain patient confidentiality
  • Checking patient’s details prior to examination and ensuring that such details are present and correct on the referral form/computer. Referrals must be justified within departmental protocols and within statutory regulations; IR(ME)R 2017 and the Radiographer must use their professional judgment to refuse inappropriate requests
  • To ensure that patients are not pregnant prior to certain procedures.
  • To supervise, clinically teach and advise other radiology staff, student radiographers and Radiology Department Assistants
  • To be reflective, independent and autonomous in thinking and outlook
  • To participate in the delivery of the regular Quality Assurance tests within the Interventional Radiology department and act on results to improve quality of service
  • Able to communicate imaging procedures empathetically to gain verbal consent and co-operation from a variety of patients including those from different cultural backgrounds, those with learning difficulties, paediatric, the elderly and infirm and traumatised patients
  • Provide advice on the booking of appointments and advice on preparation as required
  • Relates aftercare and condition related information to all patients, in a sympathetic and diplomatic manner
  • To perform examinations without radiological supervision yet acknowledging where physician input is necessary
  • To participate in the major incident procedure when required
  • To ensure that both patient care and the patient welfare are kept to the highest standard
  • To be conversant with and adhere to all safety guidelines relating to the department in connection with radiation safety and to be conversant with emergency procedures
  • To ensure protocols and procedures are maintained and updated in conjunction with radiologists to ensure the highest standards of patient care
  • Communicates effectively with a wide range of service users including patients, carers and other healthcare professionals to provide high quality patient care and use of resources and to ensure the smooth running of the service
  • To use the radiology computer system for input and retrieval of patient details as required for audit and department statistics
  • To read and adhere to the policies and procedures of the George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust
  • Have knowledge of clerical and assistant duties and be able to undertake these when required to assist with the smooth running of the department
  • To record all equipment faults and arrange for the service engineers to attend and repair any faults as soon as possible
  • To maintain a clean, tidy and safe working environment and liaise with estates or housekeeping department as necessary
  • Report to the Lead Radiographer any sickness or absence from work of any member of the department
  • Any other tasks requested by the Lead Radiographer that may reasonably be deemed to come within scope of post
  •  To keep up to date with modern practices by participating in training both onsite and attending external courses when required
  • Provides evidence of maintaining professional competencies and continuing professional development as required by HPC for state registration
  • Attends mandatory training courses in accordance with Trust policies
  • To participate in audit of clinical procedures and systems
  • Attend departmental meetings where possible and be actively involved in service improvement
  • To contribute to discussions on service/policy development
  • To provide comments on changes to policies and procedures
  • To ensure the effective use of resources, keeping waste to a minimum
  • To ensure that agreed stock levels are maintained within the Interventional Radiology department.

Person specification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Developed understanding of the need to work as an individual and as part of a team
  • Radiation safety – working knowledge of IR(M)ER 2017 regulations, and Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017
  • BSc in Diagnostic Radiography or the Diploma of the College of Radiographers
  • Good hand, eye, and sensory co-ordination necessary
  • Previous NHS experience
Desirable criteria
  • Practical experience in Interventional Radiology
  • Post grad certificate qualification or equivalent
  • Society of Radiographers Certificate of competence in administering intravenous injections or equivalent
  • Desire to expand skillset and willingness to adapt and learn new methods of working
  • Experience in teaching other professionals and students

Qualification(s) and Professional Training

Essential criteria
  • BSc or DipHE in Diagnostic Radiography
  • Evidence of CPD
  • Registration with the HCPC
  • Up-to-date mandatory training skills (CPR, Fire, H&S, MMH)
Desirable criteria
  • Post grad certificate qualification or equivalent
  • Certificate of competence in administering intravenous injections or equivalent
