Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Some of the duties and responsibilities listed below are representative of the Associate Director of Midwifery & Neonatal Services role and its purpose within the service; they are not exhaustive, and the post holder may be required to undertake additional or alternative duties and responsibilities commensurate with the level of the post, to support the smooth running of the services.
  • To ensure robust governance systems and processes are in place, striving for excellence by embedding learning from incidents and complaints.
  • Establish and maintain excellent internal and external relationships is essential to the delivery of a safe and high-quality service, influencing public health, health visiting, safeguarding, social care, mental health services, and service users as key partnerships.
  • Assist the DoM in interpreting national policy and strategy and supporting the Trust’s response to Maternity Transformation initiatives, helping to ensure effective local implementation across maternity and midwifery services.

Experience and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Registered midwife with the NMC with evidence of personal and professional commitment to CPD in line with revalidation requirements.
  • An understanding of Integrated Governance and practical approaches to implementation.
  • Evidence of working at a senior level leading change initiatives.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Neonatal services
  • Knowledge and understanding of education and research issues in an acute Trust.
  • Evidence of previous budgetary management and business planning.
  • Able to demonstrate up-to-date clinical expertise and competence and expert proven knowledge of Maternity and Neonatal services.
  • Evidence of knowledge understanding of the current issues in maternity and neonatal nursing policy and practice.
  • A proven track record of operational service management at a senior level in an acute hospital environment, including staff management and financial management.
  • Experience of recruitment and retention issues, workforce planning and capacity management.
  • Ability to produce clear, accurate, written and verbal reports.
  • Evidence of ability to confront complex and challenging issues taking a problem-solving approach. • Evidence of having managed and developed a team effectively. • Evidence of involvement in Child Safeguarding Cases and management of difficult pre and post antenatal care issues.
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of experience of working strategically both regionally and nationally.
