We have an exciting opportunity for an Anatomical Pathology Technologist at George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust to join the Mortuary Department. You will be responsible for supporting the delivery of a high-quality, cost-effective, and patient-focused mortuary service, ensuring all activities are carried out in line with professional standards and Trust objectives. Working as part of the Mortuary team, you will assist in providing an efficient and compassionate service, contributing to the smooth day-to-day operation of the department while maintaining the highest standards of care, dignity, and professionalism.
As an Anatomical Pathology Technologist, you will be responsible for carrying out duties across the full range of mortuary services, ensuring activities are completed in line with departmental procedures and professional requirements. You will work within different areas of the mortuary facility, adapting to varying service demands and maintaining operational standards.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- To assist in the preparation of deceased patients for post mortem examination as required by the Consultant Histopathologists; make accurate measurements of height/weight and record for the pathologists.
- To assist in the organisation and equipping of the post mortem room for post mortem examinations.
- To adhere to Trust policy, Coroner’s Office and Department of Health regulations and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and HTA regulations.
- To assist the Consultant Histopathologists and Home Office pathologists in a wide range of technical tasks, as requested during post mortem examinations, ensuring adherence to Trust policies and procedures and HTA regulations.
- To assist in the arrangement for specimens taken during post mortem examinations to be sent to the histology laboratory.
- To ensure that accurate records of deceased patients received into and collected from the mortuaries are in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.
- To receive telephone calls from relatives, Coroner’s Office, the Police and any other parties who wish to arrange a viewing of a deceased patient.
- In liaison with the mortuary technicians arrange a mutually agreeable time with the friends / relatives for the viewing.
- To assist in the preparation of deceased patients for viewing in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.
- To assist in the preparation of deceased patients for release to undertakers in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.
- To undertake training to achieve the Certificate of the Royal Institute of Public Health and Hygiene.
- To participate in appraisals and personal reviews and to work to achieve personal objectives.
- To consult with and inform the Network Mortuary Manager or deputies on all matters related to the mortuaries and their staff.
- To ensure the provision of a high quality service. To ensure that Unit Wide standards are maintained and monitored to improve the quality of total care to all who come into contact with services provided by Coventry and Warwickshire Pathology Service.

Experience and Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office
- preferably within a healthcare environment
Desirable criteria
- Relevant experience of working with bereaved families
- Funeral trade or experience of mortuary work
- Awareness of bereavement, cultural and religious needs
Qualification(s) and Professional Training
Essential criteria
- Basic education to GCSE level
- A-C Level Maths and English or equivalent
- Willingness to work towards Level 3 diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology as a trainee
Desirable criteria
- GCSE or equivalent in Biology/anatomy
Skills and Abilities
Essential criteria
- Good communication skills
