Main duties of the job

This post will involve working on the wards taking drug histories, assessment of Patient Own Drugs (PODs), One Stop Dispensing (OSD), patient counselling and helping expedite discharge.

Other duties may include ward temperature monitoring, medicine management audits, reviewing the usage of controlled drugs, dispensing and assessing drugs for return and working in the dispensary. You will also be required to provide rotational support to our outsourced outpatient pharmacy when required.

The successful candidate will need to have at least 2 years hospital experience as a qualified pharmacy technician and have experience working in medicines management.

An ‘Accredited Checker Technician’ qualification or working towards is required.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To carry out pharmaceutical technical duties in specified areas of the pharmacy department under the overall direction of the Lead Pharmacy Technician and the Chief Pharmacist.

 To provide a safe, efficient and comprehensive high quality pharmaceutical service, under the direction of Lead Pharmacy Technician, to patients and staff of George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust.

 To undertake training and accreditation in technical skills and knowledge as identified and agreed with Lead Pharmacy Technician and the Chief Pharmacist.

To manage work of junior Technicians and others, when deputing for Lead Pharmacy Technicians.

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Hospital pharmacy experience (Ward Top-up, Aseptic dispensing, Dispensing for In & Out Patients)
Desirable criteria
  • Prior accredited learning and/or recent experience in NHS hospital pharmacy (e.g. NVQ2, Aseptic work)
  • Community pharmacy experience

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • NVQ 3 or equivalent registered Pharmacy Technician or knowledge of pharmaceutical technical procedures acquired through training in equivalent pharmaceutical science and recent relevant work experience
  • Accredited Checking Technician Qualification

Skills and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written
