Lung Cancer Screening Specialist Nurse

Job overview

The overall purpose of the Lung Cancer Screening is to enable the early detection of lung cancer in order to save lives. Coventry & Warwickshire Health & Care Partnership and the West Midlands Cancer Alliance has identified high disease and smoking prevalence areas within Coventry where a significant impact can be made from detecting early-stage lung cancer.

The post holder will be expected to be flexible, responsive, and provide specialist knowledge to the patient (and their carers where applicable) assessing eligibility for lung cancer screening, assessing symptomatic patients and escalating as appropriate, consenting eligible patients to low dose CT scan, reviewing and sending LDCT scan results, as well as suspected lung cancer referrals and managing incidental findings as per protocol (i.e. SRM, GP, etc). Attention to detail and excellent organisation skills are of paramount importance. This post requires someone confident with spending a large amount of time on the phone to patients.

They will support community and secondary care colleagues in the effective management of patients with clinical responsibility for a defined patient group. The post holder will be able to make informed decisions within their own area and scope of professional practice to ensure agreed standards, objectives and targets are met.

Interviews are proposed for week commencing 28th September.

Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP. 

Main duties of the job

  • Reviewing and analysing of scan results and following up appropriate action, as well as participating weekly Screening Review Meetings.
  • Provide specialist lung cancer screening nursing advice to patients, carers, internal services and external stakeholders.
  • Undertake or review comprehensive lung health checks risk assessments and provide specialist lung cancer screening nursing advice to the Patient Care advisors team.
  • Assess patients’ eligibility and suitability to proceed to a diagnostic test, based on the principles of informed consent, mental capacity and submit the diagnostic test referral form.

A full UK driving license and access to a vehicle is essential for this role. Please note that an international driving license is not accepted.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Participating in the writing of protocols, guidelines, patient information and documentation required for service review and development. 
  • Supporting the clinical nurse manager in identifying and assessing complex clinical and non-clinical issues.
  • A supportive resource for staff, advising on national, local and Trust policy and procedures/guidelines, ensuring that clinical governance is embedded in practice.  
  • Support patients, carers and staff during difficult situations arising in the clinical area, e.g., breaking bad news or following an unexpected event.
  • Supporting the team with community events to improve uptake and heath inequalities. 
  • Providing Very Brief smoking cessation advice when necessary

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • Current Professional NMC Registration • Evidence of relevant CPD • Evidence of relevant post qualification study at postgraduate level or equivalent knowledge • Study at level 6 (Degree/Diploma)
Desirable criteria
  • • Leadership qualification or completion of leadership course • Teaching /mentoring qualification • GCP Training • Consent Training • IRMER qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Professional clinical experience in working in acute or community settings across Coventry and Warwickshire. • Excellent communication skills • Ability to successfully manage people and change • Experience of conflict management • Participation in audits • Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary/interdisciplinary team and follow up actions from screening review meeting. • Registered Nurse with significant band 5 experience
Desirable criteria
  • • Experience in working in Lung Cancer Screening or other Screening services. • Experience working as a band 6 • Advance communication skills course • Experience of writing / producing patient information • Health assessment • A good understanding of HR policy

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • • A knowledgeable clinician with the ability to apply evidence-based practice • An understanding of current issues relating to the NHS and cancer care • A knowledge of professional policies and procedures • Awareness of relevant national and local targets • Detailed knowledge of the LCS protocol, quality standards and incidental finding guidance.
Desirable criteria
  • • Knowledge of peer review process • Clinical knowledge of respiratory illness
