Job overview

We are seeking three enthusiastic people to join our Portering team as an Operating Department Orderly, supporting the provision of theatre services.  The post holder will be expected to cover between both Main Theatre and Day Surgery Unit.

The post holder will work with multi-disciplinary teams within Main Theatres and Day Surgery Unit, to maintain a safe environment for the patient and staff. You will be expected demonstrate a basic understanding of computerised software such as Microsoft word and excel. 

The candidate should be able work in a calm, logical and methodical way and be able to multi-task. They should also demonstrate an adaptable, flexible approach to work both within a team as well as being able to use their own initiative.

The post holder should ensure that they are familiar with the all Trust policies and procedures with special regards to Confidentiality, Health and Safety at Work and Fire.

On the job training for the post will be provided.

The post holder will be expected to work variable shift patterns, based on the departmental and operational needs.  The post is for 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday.  This may extend into weekend support, based on the departmental needs. The post holder may also be asked to cross cover in our radiology department as and when required.

Main duties of the job

To work as a Hospital Porter between our Radiology and Theatre departments transferring patients, request forms and stock, between wards, outpatient clinics and radiology departments in a manner which will lead to an efficient throughput of workload and comfortable experience for the patient.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To convey patients to and from Departments for clinical examinations via chair, beds or stretchers as part of a team or on an individual basis.

To collect and deliver notes & request forms to and from as per Radiology Department protocol.

Disposal of soiled linen, sharps, magpie boxes and other waste products in line with Trust waste policy.

To assist radiographers with moving of patients for clinical examinations when required.

To assist ambulance crews with transfer of patients.

To be responsible for the cleaning of chairs and stretchers, including the documentation.

Daily checking and maintenance of oxygen cylinders.

Assist with first line maintenance of wheelchairs/ stretchers reporting and recording faults to Line Manager/ Section Lead and/ or estates as required.

To assist with the movement of technical equipment to other wards and departments (Intensive Therapy Unit (ITU), Coronary Care Unit (CCU), Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) etc) when required.

To participate in evening and weekend working on a roster basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Ensure knowledge is kept up to date and be aware of Trust and departmental policies and procedures for: -

Emergency and cardiac arrest procedures.

Waste Policy.

Guidelines for patients for special procedures.

Guidelines for patients from ITU.

Policy for Infection Control and management of these patients.

To ensure compliance with Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations (IR(ME)R), Ionising Radiation Regulations (IRR) Health & Safety Act, Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH).

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Good command of written/ verbal English.
  • Maths and English GCSE (or equivalent level 2 qualification)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working in an environment with broad range of people
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in a hospital or care environment.

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Keyboard Skills (data inputting only).
  • Willingness to learn and work within departmental procedures
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of Porter procedures
  • Worked/ Cared for sick people

Personal Qualities

Essential criteria
  • Able to work under direction/ supervision of professional staff.
  • To be a calm, caring, understanding person in order to deal with the sick, frail and elderly patients.
Desirable criteria
  • To converse with patients, their relatives and colleagues in a polite and courteous manner
  • Ability to prioritise daily allocated workload

Other

Essential criteria
  • Physically fit. Regularly moving patients from wards to departments.
