Probationary Period

All new staff to the Trust will be subject to a standard 6 month probationary period, the details of which will duly follow in your contract of employment.

Agile and Flexible Working

All our staff will have a work base. However the Trust operates as an Agile Working Team therefore staff may be working from home on a regular basis as required by the service. However, occasionally travel around Warwickshire and into your base will be required so access to your own transport would be helpful.

Job overview

South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust are currently recruiting a full time Band 6 Clinical Sister, for Malins and CCU within Warwick Hospital.

Our Cardiology unit includes a 9 bedded CCU area, 20 bedded medical/cardiology ward and a diagnostic Cath lab. 

Malins Ward is a very dynamic working environment with some Multi-Disciplinary working. It is a 20 bedded ward. We care for a range of conditions including arrhythmia, Chest pain ACS, Heart failure with Telemetry support.  Experience of caring for patients with cardiology conditions and being in charge of a medical ward is essential.

Our Coronary care unit is a 9 bedded unit that supports the needs of  Level 2 patents.  We Provide Cardiac CPAP, Cardiac monitoring, Blood pressure support and a varied range of other medical interventions.

As a unit we strive to give an excellent learning experience to our nursing students and your assessor qualification will be essential. This is an opportunity to develop your skills within the field of cardiology in a supportive environment in areas such as cardiac outreach, cardioversion and Cardiac Rehab.

You will be a robust individual, enthusiastic with good communication skills and be a good team player. Be a positive leader and support to the whole team. The post will be rotational between days and nights.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work primarily within either CCU or Malins. They will work in partnership with Ward Manager supporting the delivery of a consistently high quality and cost effective service across Malins and CCU.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Key Result Areas:

Clinical

To assist the Ward Manager in leading a team of nurses in the delivery of a high standard of care

To communicate complex sensitive and complex information to patients or careers.

To participate in the Cardiology nurse rota

To audit care against agreed standards

To identify any weaknesses that are evident in the delivery of care and 

develop action plans to address weaknesses

To implement information strategies ensuring that patients and carers are given as much information relating to their investigations and their diagnosis as they need

To base own practice on current best evidence

To lead on any shift allocated the care for the unit

To lead in the evaluation of current research findings and if appropriate implement into practice on unit

To lead on identified clinical audit projects

To ensure data with DIGIT, LORENZO and SAFECARE are kept up to date through the shift.

To ensure PCI and other audits are completed for all patients across the unit.

Manage Services - Main Duties

To maintain services to meet contract and quality standards, take corrective action and inform the Unit Manager of unresolved problems. 

To review the standard of care and documentation at regular intervals, benchmarking performance against NMC guidelines and other national and local targets.

To promote patient involvement in care.  Implements communication system to keep patients and their relatives/families informed of treatment and progress.  Undertake audits at required intervals to maintain standards of record keeping.

To investigate complaints and untoward incidents in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.  Provide statements accurately, timely and professionally.  Supports the Ward Manager in improving systems to prevent recurrence.

Manage Finance - Main Duties

To contribute to the planning, monitoring and control of unit resources, assisting the Ward Manager to keep expenditures within budgets.

To assist the Ward Manager to optimise nursing resources by even distribution of staff annual leave and matching skill mix to workload.  

Manage People - Main Duties

To contribute to the recruitment and selection of quality staff for the unit, identifying future job requirements for profiling to complement team.

To contribute to the development of teams, individuals and self to enhance performance.  Facilitate staff development to achieve ward objectives using the principles of IPR and PDP.  Monitor staff performance and report progress to the Ward Manager at regular intervals

To contribute to the planning, organisation and evaluation of work, ensuring adequate induction of new staff including effective preceptorship for newly qualified nurses (and nurses new to specialty), monitoring of the practice of Band 5 and Band 2/3 staff and mentorship for student nurses on ward/ department placements.  To ensure the ward is staff appropriately and within budget at all times.

To create, maintain and enhance productive working relationships within and outside the ward/department by minimising unproductive conflicts and promoting positive team working.  Informs the Ward Manager of unresolved and potential problems.

To promote staff compliance of Trust policies and procedures.  Undertake counselling as appropriate and report difficult cases to the Ward manager for further action.

Manage Information

To provide information and advice for action towards organisational objectives.  Attends divisional and other meetings (on behalf of Ward Manager as necessary) in order to disseminate information up and down the Directorate line management structure.

To assist the Ward Manager to collect and organise information for incorporation into the Divisional service plans.

Professional

To keep abreast of new health care related developments, ensuring that nursing practice is up to date, evidence based and cost effective.

To be responsible for own personal and professional development and assist the Ward Manager in the development of junior staff as required.

To be responsible for own professional registration and assist the Unit

Manager in ensuring that all qualified nurses have valid NMC registration and practise in accordance with NMC code of professional conduct.

 

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Degree in adult nursing (or equivalent).
  • Teaching and assessing qualification
  • Recognised cardiology qualification
  • Moving and handling, basic CPR, IT Skills, intravenous drug administration
  • Venepuncture and cannulation skills

Experience

Essential criteria
  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience at band 5 in Cardiology with evidence of continued professional development in this area.
  • To be currently working at a level of taking charge of a shift on CCU

Skills
