Probationary Period

All new staff to the Trust will be subject to a standard 6 month probationary period, the details of which will duly follow in your contract of employment.

Agile and Flexible Working

All our staff will have a work base. However the Trust operates as an Agile Working Team therefore staff may be working from home on a regular basis as required by the service. However, occasionally travel around Warwickshire and into your base will be required so access to your own transport would be helpful.

Job overview

The Paediatric Department is based in a purpose built, up to date and child friendly unit comprising of an 18 bed inpatient area, including high dependency patients, a 5 bedded Paediatric Assessment Unit and an outpatient area providing first class accommodation.A Level 1 Special Care Baby Unit with 11 cots. Babies requiring intensive care are stabilised at Warwick Hospital and then transferred elsewhere, usually within the Paediatric Network. Our unit has facilities to ventilate sick neonates awaiting transfer.

The Medical Personnel within Paediatrics comprises 9 Consultants, who undertake acute Paediatric work. The Resident Middle Grade Tier consists of 1 Junior Trust Specialist, 2 ST4+ (one hospital based and the other community based) and 6 Specialty Doctors.

There are 9 ST 1- 3 (5 GPVTS and 4 Paediatric trainee's, 2 are Community based) all of whom provide first on call cover.

There is 1 Foundation year 1 trainee who works 9-5 in the Paediatric unit and partakes in the medical on-call rota.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will work within the team with the junior doctors and consultants. There is an expectation that the successful applicant would supervise the junior staff and institute immediate clinical and on-going care for the patients on the ward.

The post holder will also be expected to participate and lead on clinics as required (Flexibility will be required)

There are opportunities for the post holder to gain experience in specialist clinics.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To support the inpatient and outpatient service in Paediatrics and Neonates at Warwick Hospital

Whilst on duty, the post holder has clinical and professional responsibility for their patients. It is also the duty of the post holder to:

  • Keep patients (and/or their carers as appropriate) informed about their condition.Involve patients and/or their carers if appropriate in decision making about their treatment.
  • Maintain professional standards and obligations as set out by the General Medical Council and comply in particular with the GMCs guidance on Good Medical Practice.

The post holder will be responsible for carrying out any work related to and reasonably incidental to the duties set out in their Job Plan such as:

  • The keeping of records and the provision of reports
  • The proper delegation of tasks
  • Maintaining skills and knowledge
  • To take responsibility for continuing professional education in accordance with guidelines set out by the appropriate college/faculty/professional body.
  • To initiate and participate in research and audit programmes in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.
  • To work in collaboration with colleagues in developing skills to provide new ways of working across different professions, organisations i.e. community/primary care.
  • Work in conjunction with Consultant colleagues, to ensure that the requirements of clinical governance are met.
  • To participate in clinical and other service activities with the object of ensuring a high standard of patient care.
  • To be able to work flexibly.
  • To take an active part in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training.
  • To contribute to the management of the clinical service and service development.

Professional Criteria

Essential criteria
  • Minimum of 18 months experience working in acute Paediatrics and Neonates
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in Tertiary Neonates

Academic Achievements

  • MBBS or equivalent
  • APLS and NLS holder
  • Level 2 Competencies (Safeguarding)

  • Additional relevant qualifications
  • MRCPCH (Part 2)
