University Hospitals Sussex Dermatology “East” covers Brighton General Hospital (BGH), Princess Royal Hospital (PRH) and Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital (RACH) but is predominantly based at Brighton General Hospital. The main unit has dedicated facilities, which include operating theatres, treatment rooms, a phototherapy unit and consultation suites, and functions as a central hub for clinical, academic, and postgraduate activities. There are weekly multi-disciplinary skin cancer meetings. Outpatient services are also provided to other local hospitals including Lewes Victoria Hospital, Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath and the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton. We have our own dedicated booking, administration and secretarial teams that run on the Brighton General site. We have used an Electronic Patient Record since 2015 and are almost fully paperless. Our service has embraced new ways of working to the benefit of our patients and our staff.

The Dermatology team is comprised of eleven Consultant Dermatologists, two Consultant Plastic Surgeons, five Speciality Registrars, a Research Clinical Fellow, a Surgical Clinical Fellow, and three GPs with special interest in Dermatology.  The specialist dermatology nursing service supports clinics including phototherapy, wound care, nurse-led minor procedures, photodynamic therapy, and systemic and biologic monitoring.  We also have two Physician Associates providing support in the outpatient clinics and minor operations.

The Dermatology department in Brighton has a high patient throughput of 34,000 consultations per annum. Approximately 16,000 new patients & 18,000 follow ups are seen with 2,600 minor procedures conducted in the dermatology day-case theatres and minor treatment rooms. There are specialist clinics for patients with Psoriasis, Eczema, Melanoma, Immunosuppressed skin surveillance, Paediatric dermatology, Vulval disease, Hair and Scalp disorders, Psychodermatology, Teledermatology, and Hidradenitis Suppurativa. A phototherapy unit provides a full range of treatments include narrowband TLO1, PUVA treatment, and hand/foot PUVA. Most of our consultants have regular two week wait clinics and daycase operating lists. We have two purpose built daycase theatres as well as minor ops treatment rooms in outpatients.
The post holder will have access to a shared office space with secretarial and administrative support staff on site. The Dermatology service uses an Electronic Patient Record System (Systm One) with an integrated pathology/radiology application and integrated dictation software. Trust laptops support flexible working patterns with remote access.
