NHS Medical & Dental: Specialty Doctor

Job overview

We are a busy anaesthetic department with a commitment to train both local and international trainees and have an active educational programme. The successful candidate will hold the FRCA or equivalent and have evidence of extensive experience within anaesthesia. We particularly welcome applications from motivated individuals keen to invest in the development of our services and who will contribute to a positive departmental culture.

Successful applicants will undertake anaesthetic sessions across a broad range of surgical specialties, including Bariatric Surgery, General Surgery, Trauma and Orthopaedics, Maxillo-facial, Urology and Gynaecology.

The Anaesthetic departments at University Hospitals across all sites, are extremely forward thinking and have established themselves within the research arena, with multiple presentations at National and International meetings.

St Richard’s Hospital is currently the largest NHS bariatric surgery provider in the south of England, we welcome applications from candidates with a bariatric interest.

The hospital is located between the sea and the South Downs National Park, giving ample opportunity to pursue a variety of different interests

Main duties of the job

The successful applicants will take part in a general anaesthetics rota, comprising anaesthetic duties for a wide range of surgical interventions, both planned and emergency (specialties detailed above). Regular obstetric and ITU sessions are also expected and will be detailed in job plan.

The post holder accepts that they will also perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultant, in consultation, where practicable, with their colleagues, both senior and junior. Whilst it has been agreed between the professions that they will perform such duties, the Secretary of State stresses that additional commitments arising under this sub-section are exceptions and you should not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis.

On Call Commitment: The Specialty Doctor forms an important role within our department working as part of our Junior Doctor on call team. It is anticipated that the Specialty Doctor will rotate across all specialities (Cepod, Obstetrics and ITU) All of our rotas are a 1:10 ratio and are recognised with an additional 2PA allowance.
