Barnsley Integrated Sexual Health Service (BISH)

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic colleague to join our team in Barnsley. Gateway clinic delivers high quality, patient focussed care in both fully integrated sexual health and HIV medicine.   

The successful candidate is required to be on the specialist register for Genito-urinary medicine or to be within 6 months of expected CCT date.

They must have prior experience of working in an integrated sexual health service, and extensive experience in the delivery HIV care, including management of complex cases. There is no on-call commitment or inpatient responsibility attached to this post. Evening working may be required.

Spectrum CIC employees are able to join the NHS pension scheme and salaries are based on National NHS pay scales.

Main duties of the job

 

Barnsley Sexual Health Service is delivered from Gateway Clinic, close to the town centre. We provide level 3 contraception, STI management and HIV out-patient care services. 

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic colleague with a passion for sexual health and HIV. This is a replacement consultant post and the successful candidate will work alongside one other consultant who is the clinical lead for the unit.

The post holder will manage a caseload of sexually transmitted infections, including complex presentations, and HIV. They will also be expected to deliver a range of contraception services. If necessary, enhanced training in contraception will be provided.

The HIV service is run from the community clinic, utilising electronic patient records and home delivery of medication for a caseload of around 300 patients. Specialist HIV in-patient care is delivered by Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, and attendance at virtual MDT meetings is encouraged.

The post holder will have no in-patient responsibilities but will be expected to provide clinical advice as required to Barnsley hospital (0.7 miles from the clinic). There is no on call commitment with this post.

The service is actively involved in teaching and training internal and external students, and the successful candidate will be expected to take an active leadership role in the planning and delivery of teaching sessions.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Medical Degree MB ChB MRCP or equivalent
  • Full registration with GMC Licence to practice
  • Eligible for entry on GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in GU Medicine
Desirable criteria
  • MD or PhD
  • Medical Ed Qualification
  • Diploma of the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare
  • Letter of Competence - IUD Letter of Competence - SDI
  • Instructing and assessing status for FSRH (FRT)
  • STIF train the trainers

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Extensive training and broad experience in GUM Medicine, including complex presentations
  • Sound clinical judgement and an ability to offer expert clinical opinion on all sexual health related problems.
  • Recent delivery of outpatient care at SpR or higher level to a large HIV cohort with complex needs
  • Experience in the management of complex HIV patients, including participation in specialist MDT meetings.
  • Ability to take full & independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
  • Evidence of ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Good understanding of clinical governance and quality outcomes
  • Good understanding of evidence-based medicine. Ability to critically assess published research and incorporate it into clinical practice where appropriate
  • Awareness of new developments in the specialty with the ability to assess critically the impact of these on the service

  • Evidence of ongoing teaching and training
  • Experience in working in an integrated sexual healthcare environment
