Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity to work within Children & Young People’s services at Calderdale & Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust (CHFT). The post holder(s) will become a substantive Paediatric Trust Grade Doctor (ST4-8 or equivalent level) becoming a valued part of the paediatric medical team at CHFT.

The Trust covers a population of approximately 500,000 with a wide range of diversity and deprivation. The Children’s Ward is 38 bedded with a Paediatric Same Day Emergency Care (PSDEC) Unit which sees over 7000 attendances per year.

The level 2 Neonatal Unit has 20 cots including 6 intensive care cots. It is based in Calderdale and delivers intensive, high dependency and special care for babies born at 27 weeks gestation and above. 

A recently established Paediatric Emergency Department is located at Calderdale. There are exciting developments with reconfiguration planned in the next few years. 

Outpatient care is provided across 2 Children’s Outpatient Departments and a bespoke Child Development Centre. There are 20 consultants who all have special interests covering the majority of subspecialities. 

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work at ST4-8 grade alongside paediatric trainees ST4-8 and other Trust doctors. They will be expected to cover the Children’s Ward and PSDEC (total 37 beds), the level 2 (LNU) Neonatal Unit (3 ICU, 3 HDU, 14 SCBU) and contribute to outpatient clinics. They will always be supervised by a Consultant

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MRCPCH or equivalent
  • Registered with the GMC & hold licence to practice
  • Relevant Higher Degree

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in all aspects of the paediatrics speciality
  • Experience working in the NHS
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in Neonates
  • Understanding of current issues in the wider NHS
  • Understanding of current issues within Paediatrics and the future direction of the speciality
  • Attendance at a recognised management course
  • Ability to work with and lead others across professions

Teaching & Training

Essential criteria
  • Experience of and enthusiasm for clinical teaching of postgraduate doctors & non medical staff
Desirable criteria
  • Academic achievements/evidence of familiarity with research methods which have resulted in publications
  • Training in clinical and educational supervision
  • Attendance at a teaching course
  • Formal qualification in teaching/education
