Job overview

We are seeking to appoint  and are looking for a dynamic and motivated Consultant in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery to join our friendly and enthusiastic team. This will take us to a compliment of 3 consultants and a clinical nurse specialists delivering service to the local population.

There is a strong focus on career development and professional support within a forward-thinking and supportive surgical department. There is an opportunity to tailor your practice to other disciplines of plastic surgery.

Main duties of the job

The post is ideal for operating independently in general plastic surgery with a focus on skin surgery with reconstruction, breast and perineal and abdominal wall reconstruction and who is also keen to explore new innovative improvements within the service and have a keen interest and active role in teaching.

The department works closely with the dermatology department ensuring that patients are seen within two weeks wait of their pathway, providing outpatients, minor ops and daycase procedures in plastic surgery.

We employ more than 6,500 staff who deliver compassionate care from our two main hospitals, Calderdale Royal Hospital and Huddersfield Royal Infirmary as well as in community sites, health centres and in patients’ homes. We also are incredibly proud to have almost 150 volunteers here at CHFT.

We provide a range of services including urgent and emergency care; medical; surgical; maternity; gynaecology; critical care; children’s and young people’s services; end of life care and outpatient and diagnostic imaging services.

We provide community health services, including sexual health services in Calderdale from Calderdale Royal and local health centres. These include Todmorden Health Centre and Broad Street Plaza. 

We continue to modernise and invest in our health services to build on our strong reputation. Foundation trusts are public leaders in improving quality in health services. Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • FRCS or equivalent
  • The post holder must be fully registered with GMC and hold a current license to practice
Desirable criteria
  • You must be on the specialist register for Plastic Surgery or within 6 months of being admitted to the register for trainees, if currently in a training programme in the UK. In accordance with the regulations, all other categories of Doctors must be on the GMC specialist register to be considered for a consultant appointment by the Advisory Appointments Committee
  • Relevant higher degree (MD/PhD)

Experience and Achievements

Essential criteria
  • Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in all aspects of Plastic Surgery
  • Experience of all aspects of Skin Oncology including melanoma and referral pathways.
  • Experience of working in breast reconstruction, perineal reconstruction, and hand surgery
Desirable criteria
  • Postgraduate qualification in medical education
  • Understanding current issues within colorectal & general surgery and the future direction of the specialty
  • Understanding current issues within the wider NHS
  • Attendance at a recognized management course
  • Shows ability to work with and lead others across professions

Teaching and Training

Desirable criteria
  • Experience of and enthusiasm for clinical teaching of postgraduate doctors and non-medical staff.
  • Academic achievements/evidence of familiarity with research methods which have resulted in publications
  • Training in clinical and educational supervision
  • Attendance at a teaching course
  • Formal qualification in teaching/education

Audit and Research

Desirable criteria
  • Critical Appraisal Skills
  • Knowledge of Audit principles and evidence of participation in and completion of audit projects
  • Evidence of knowledge of research methodology

  • Ability to integrate the care of a patient by many and various other clinical staff
  • Willingness to work flexibly to deliver clinically effective and cost effective healthcare

Essential criteria
  • Eligibility to work in the UK
  • Ability to work in various locations throughout the network of services provided by Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust
  • For areas requiring EPP Clearance (Exposure Prone Procedures), this will also be a requirement of the health screening
  • An enhanced DBS disclosure will be required with the Disclosure and Barring Service
