Job overview
The Training Programme Director in Clinical Oncology NW will support the Head of School in the Strategic Development of the School of Medicine.
The post holder will lead on the development of the School’s Recruitment and Retention Strategy and contribute to supporting the School Operational Programme.
The post holder will be a member of the School Board.
Main duties of the job
- Work in collaboration with Head of School of Medicine to develop and implement a Medical Workforce Strategy which supports the recruitment and retention of Clinical Oncology Trainees with focus on the regional education programs.
- Develop ideas that will improve the working lives of doctors and maximize enjoyment whilst in training positions.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The Programme Director will ensure that both national standards, determined by the Royal College, and guidelines and standards established within Clinical Oncology are met. Responsibilities will include:
- To oversee the Specialty’s Regional Training Programme
- Specialty-specific matters and trainee/trainer concerns
- Recruitment to training posts and programmes
- Postgraduate programme management, including assessments, progression, rotations, support and remediation, OOP management, trainee management careers support, less than full-time training, inter-deanery transfer, academic training and other related work-streams.
The ideal candidate will be an experienced NHS Consultant with a thorough understanding of Clinical Oncology training across the region and who will also have strong leadership and communication skills and be able to work effectively as a member of a multi-professional team.

Secondments
Applicants from within the NHS will be offered on a secondment basis only, agreement should be obtained from their employer prior to submitting the application.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Substantive Consultant or Specialty Doctor in Clinical Oncology currently working in NHS in North-West England
- Member / Fellow of the Royal College
Desirable criteria
- Education Qualification such as Postgraduate Certificate, Diploma or Masters in Medical Education
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of organising/delivering education programmes/courses
- Considerable experience of working with doctors in an educational context
- Good understanding of the curriculum including placements that must be completed.
- Experience as an educational supervisor for ST3+ doctors in Clinical Oncology
- Experience participating in ARCPs
- Experience in supporting doctors who have struggled with medical examinations
- Trained and experienced in recruitment, selection and Equality and Diversity in the last 3 years
Desirable criteria
- Awareness of funding streams for Healthcare Education
- Previous or current appointment as a leader in healthcare education
- Delivery of educational projects
